Anyway, I booked the afternoon tea, it's legendary, apparently. But I'm a bit nervous about the whole thing. Will I accidentally spill my Earl Grey on some priceless antique? Will I know which fork to use? I'm more of a "grab a street Pad Thai" kind of guy. Help!

tbh you'll prob have more fun if you treat it like a tasting menu than a formal tea ceremony. the hotels here know their crowd, half the people doing afternoon tea are instagramming it anyway so nobody's judging your fork choice. if you're at the Mandarin Oriental ask for the table by the river, the view of the Chao Phraya traffic is way more entertaining than worrying about which tier to start on. worst case scenario you knock over a cup and a guy in a white uniform materializes to fix it before you even finish saying sorry

honestly just go for it, the staff at places like the Mandarin Oriental have seen it all and they're super professional. if you're nervous about the etiquette just watch what the table next to you does, it's easier than memorizing rules. also the scones at The Peninsula come with a killer local twist, they do a mango sticky rice version that's way better than traditional clotted cream imo

ngl the whole fork thing is overblown, the three-tier stand is pretty self-explanatory and nobody's grading you on it. if you're really stressing just start from the bottom and work up, savory to sweet, that's the usual flow anyway. the real flex is knowing when to ask for a to-go box, most of these hotel teas give you way too much food and it'd be a shame to waste it. also if you're at the Mandarin Oriental their scones come with a rose petal jam that's worth the price of admission alone, way better than fighting with clotted cream

yeah Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but if you're up for a detour, try Som Tum Nua near Siam Square. their som tam pu pla ra is insane if you like the fermented fish sauce kick. way more pungent than the On Nut spot, just less grilled chicken options
