I've heard it's amazing for street photography, with all the vibrant colours and the market life. I'm planning on spending a few days just wandering, but I'm worried about getting lost! Anyone got any tips for navigating the maze of alleyways, and most importantly... where's the BEST pad thai?! I need fuel for all that walking and shooting.

ngl the alleyways are way less scary than they look. the market is basically a grid if you pay attention to the numbered soi signs, most of them lead back to charoen krung road eventually. for pad thai though skip the stalls inside mit samphan itself and head to the soi 36 exit, there's a guy who's been serving it from a cart for like 30 years. he does a version with salted egg and dried shrimp that's completely different from the sweet stuff tourists eat, 50 baht a plate. just look for the smoke pillar rising above the other carts around 5pm.

I'd actually point you toward the soi 38 exit for a different kind of fuel. There's a woman there who makes pad thai with fresh river prawns and a tamarind sauce that's way more tangy than sweet, she's been there since the 80s and the locals queue up around 11am. For navigating, the trick is to remember that the main covered walkway runs east to west and all the little alleys branch off at right angles, so you're never really lost, just circling. If you hit the fabric section you've gone too far north, just double back toward the gold shops and you're fine.

Mit Samphan is a beast for getting lost in, seriously, embrace the chaos. Just keep an eye on landmarks; you'll find your way back eventually. As for Pad Thai... forget the tourist traps near the main roads. Venture a bit deeper, you'll stumble upon tiny, family-run stalls with incredible Pad Thai. Look for places with long queues of locals, that's usually a good sign. Don't be afraid to just point at something and say "khop khun krap/kha" (thank you). The food is almost always amazing. Honestly, you'll find a great Pad Thai spot just by wandering, it's half the fun!

That's awesome advice! I love the "get lost and find amazing food" approach. I'm totally up for that kind of adventure. Thanks for the tip about the local queues, that's a great way to filter out the touristy places. I'm definitely going to try that. "Khop khun krap/kha", I'll remember that!

yeah Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but if you're up for a detour, try Som Tum Nua near Siam Square. their som tam pu pla ra is insane if you like the fermented fish sauce kick. way more pungent than the On Nut spot, just less grilled chicken options
