Ask Locals Anything in Bangkok!

Get authentic advice or meet people in Bangkok for travel tips, best food recommendations or hangouts from locals, guides and travelers.

Lumphini Park is great for shorter loops, you can easily string several together to hit your 15-25km target. Just be aware it gets very crowded, especially in the evenings and weekends. For something less congested, check out Bang Krachao – it's a bit further out but offers much quieter, scenic running along the Chao Phraya River. You'll need to factor in travel time to get there though.

Finding high-quality, casual linen shirts

Seeking relaxed-fit, long-sleeved linen or linen-blend shirts with a soft collar, one chest pocket, bright solid colors, and a budget of 2500 THB per shirt. Uniqlo's lack of pockets is a problem.

Check out the smaller independent boutiques around Siam Square and Sukhumvit Soi 11. They often carry unique, higher-quality stuff than the big chain stores, and you're more likely to find exactly what you're looking for in terms of style and fit. Be prepared to haggle a bit, though – it's part of the experience!

That's great advice! I hadn't thought of the smaller boutiques – I usually just hit the bigger malls. Haggling doesn't bother me, I kind of enjoy it actually. Thanks for the specific locations too, that really helps narrow down my search.

Bangkok Trip for Young Women

A 17-year-old American and her cousins are visiting Bangkok for two weeks in January. They're looking for recommendations on must-see sights and safety advice for female travelers.

January in Bangkok is hot and humid, so pack light, breathable clothing. Wat Arun and the Grand Palace are essential, but be mindful of dress codes (shoulders and knees covered). For a less touristy experience, explore the canals (khlongs) – a longtail boat ride is a great way to see a different side of the city. Safety-wise, stick to well-lit areas at night, especially if using public transport like the BTS Skytrain or MRT subway. Use ride-hailing apps like Grab instead of taxis for better safety and pricing transparency. Learn a few basic Thai phrases – it goes a long way. And finally, be aware of your surroundings and belongings, just as you would anywhere else.

My Poem

Thailand's bustling streets, a symphony of tuk-tuks and chaotic energy, offer vibrant fun, but be warned – the street vendors' bum gun water squirts can be painful if you've got hemorrhoids.

Ouch. That's a... specific concern. I'd suggest sticking to the sidewalks as much as possible, especially in areas known for tourist crowds. And maybe pack some Preparation H just in case. Bangkok's a blast, but it's definitely got its own brand of unexpected hazards.

New Year's Fireworks Viewing

Looking for the best spots to watch New Year's fireworks, ideally along the riverfront, but open to other suggestions.

The Chao Phraya River offers stunning views, but get there extremely early. Seriously, hours before anything's even scheduled. Alternatively, rooftop bars with a river view tend to be popular (and pricey), but you'll have a reserved spot and likely some decent drinks to go with the show. Check out the various hotels along the river; many advertise special New Year's Eve events with firework viewing included.

Helmet checks on Sukhumvit 71

Grab bike driver insisted I wear a helmet today traveling from Lat Phrao to On Nut, saw two police checkpoints around 3 PM. Is this a new law or just holiday enforcement? First time seeing this in t… more

Increased enforcement around holidays isn't unusual. They often ramp up visibility for things like seatbelts and helmets then. Doesn't necessarily mean a new law, just a temporary crackdown. Sukhumvit 71 is a pretty busy road, so they might target it more frequently.

That makes sense. I hadn't thought about the holiday timing. Thanks for the explanation! I guess I'll just be extra careful riding through there for a while.

Bangkok MTG Players?

Looking for Magic: The Gathering players in Bangkok for casual games and drinks.

Check out the Facebook groups for Magic: The Gathering in Bangkok. There are usually a few active ones with regular meetups. Good luck finding your playgroup!

Central World Restaurant Hours

HaiDiLao at CentralWorld shows a 10 AM to 3 AM opening, but CentralWorld itself closes at 10 PM. Is there a cutoff time for HaiDiLao, meaning you need to arrive before 10 PM?

Likely they just haven't updated their hours. I'd call them directly to confirm before heading over, to avoid disappointment. CentralWorld's closing time probably affects their last seating time, not necessarily when they fully shut down their kitchen and close the doors.

That's a really good point about the last seating. I hadn't thought of that. Calling ahead is definitely the safest bet. Thanks!

Padel players wanted in Bangkok

Seeking casual padel games in Bangkok over the next couple of weeks. Beginner/intermediate level. Fun and improvement focused.

Check out the Bangkok Padel Club's Facebook group. They often have threads for casual games and finding partners. Good luck!

New Phra Khanong boat service

A new boat dock is being built behind the Phra Khanong bridge. Anyone know the route?

Haven't heard anything official about the route yet, but I'd bet it'll connect to the Chao Phraya River, probably somewhere near the central piers. Keep an eye on the BMA website or local news for updates. They usually announce these things there before signage goes up.
