Is it true that human trafficking is highest in Thailand?

70% of human trafficking among SEA is reported to be from Thailand. Why is it happening? 70% of human trafficking among SEA is reported to be from Thailand. Why is it happening?

thailand's position as a regional economic hub is a big part of it. people come from poorer neighboring countries looking for work, and that vulnerability gets exploited. the fishing industry off the coast of samut sakhon is the classic example, but it's also in construction and factories around bangkok's outskirts.

the government passed anti trafficking laws a while back but enforcement is patchy. the US state department's TIP report downgraded thailand a few years ago and that actually pushed some reforms. but the roots are poverty and lack of legal migration pathways, not some uniquely thai problem.

if you want to see how it plays out locally, take a trip to the port area in mahachai. the migrant community there is huge and you can see the contrast between legal and illegal workers. the fishers market at 4am is something else too

the 70% stat gets thrown around a lot but it's worth digging into where that data comes from. a lot of it is from UNODC reports that count thailand as both origin and destination, so cases involving thai citizens working abroad get lumped in with foreign victims here. plus thailand actually has a system for tracking this stuff, even if it's flawed, while cambodia and myanmar basically don't keep records at all.

the fishing boats out of samut prakan are where most of the forced labor happens, not tourist areas. if you wanna understand it better, skip the news articles and read the environmental justice foundation reports on thai fishing. they did the actual fieldwork that got the EU's yellow card on thailand's fisheries a few years back. that's what forced real change, not government initiatives.

honestly the stats people throw around about thailand are often misleading. a lot of those numbers come from forced labor in fishing and agriculture, not sex trafficking like most people assume. thailand reports it more transparently than neighboring countries, so the numbers look higher here while places like myanmar or laos barely report anything.

if you walk around sukhumvit or pratunam you're not gonna see people being trafficked. go spend time in samut sakhon or the border areas near myawaddy and you'll see a different story. the real issue is weak enforcement in industries that rely on migrant workers from myanmar and cambodia who have no legal protections.

best thing you can do is avoid businesses that are obviously sketchy with their workers. if a massage place on khao san is paying 200 baht for an hour massage, someone's getting screwed somewhere in that chain.

yeah Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but if you're up for a detour, try Som Tum Nua near Siam Square. their som tam pu pla ra is insane if you like the fermented fish sauce kick. way more pungent than the On Nut spot, just less grilled chicken options
