Hello everyone!

As the title says I'll be staying in the city for 1 month and for the first time in Thailand.

I have accommodation ready and I'm planning to go on a few short trips to Malaysia and/or Cambodia.

I'd like to know if you guys may have some general recommendations as of how to spend some time in the city, what should be avoided and maybe some not so obvious warnings you wish you knew beforehand.

I did a bit of research and decided to ask here anyway. If there's s better resource to find this out I'd appreciate if you point me there. Thanks in advance and sorry if this was out of place.

PD

I'm mexican so I'm intrigued about how spicy things are around there and if I'll be able to tolerate them 😊

You'll be fine with the spice as a Mexican. Thai spicy is different but you can handle it, just be careful with the small green chilies in som tam or nam prik kapi. Street stalls usually tone it down for tourists unless you say "phet phet" which means extra spicy, and even then they might not believe you.

For a month stay, I'd recommend getting a BTS Rabbit card right away. The skytrain gets you everywhere central and saves you from dealing with taxis that refuse the meter. If you do take taxis, insist on the meter or use Grab, especially around Sukhumvit where drivers love to quote flat rates of 200 baht for short trips.

Don't skip the areas outside central Bangkok. Take a day trip to Thonburi on the other side of the river, or go up to Ayutthaya for the ruins. The weekend market Chatuchak is worth it but go early before it gets hot, and bring cash since most stalls don't take cards. For Malaysia and Cambodia, book your flights in advance from Don Mueang if you're on a budget, Air Asia and Nok Air have cheap connections.

dont overplan, a month is plenty of time to just chill. check out the river ferries, way cheaper than bts and you see a different side of the city. also, try the roti sellers at night, best street snack ever

honestly the best thing i did was just wander around random soi alleys off the main streets. so much cool street art and tiny cafes you'd never find online. also, get the grab app for food delivery, it's a lifesaver when it's too hot to walk and you want real thai food without leaving ur room

best som tam in Bangkok? Krua Dok Mai Kao 2026

yeah Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but if you're up for a detour, try Som Tum Nua near Siam Square. their som tam pu pla ra is insane if you like the fermented fish sauce kick. way more pungent than the On Nut spot, just less grilled chicken options
