How to understand Bangkok and what to visit?

I've never felt this way about other cities. Usually, there are well-recommended areas in other cities, but if I understand correctly, everything is scattered all over the city? How should I divide the city to get an overview and understand where things are and what's in these areas?

For example where to stay to be middle of anywhere between or areas worth to stay if I want to change location from week to week?

the river is your best friend for understanding bangkok. everything north of it is the old city, rattanakosin, where the grand palace and temples are. south of the river is thonburi, which feels like a different world with canals and wooden houses. the sukhumvit road running east is where all the modern stuff is, malls and nightlife, but it's a long strip so each bts stop really does feel separate. i'd spend a week in banglamphu near khao san road for the chaos, then a week in thong lo for the cafes and restaurants, then maybe a week in silom for the business district vibe and weekend market access

honestly dont overthink it, bangkok is just a bunch of neighborhoods stacked on top of each other with no real center. try splitting it by vibe instead of map: old town for temples and street food, sukhumvit for shopping and nightlife, and riverside for chill walks. stay in ari or phra khanong for a week each, they're quieter but still connected by bts and you'll get a feel for how the city flows

just pick a different bts station each week honestly. the city makes way more sense if you treat each skytrain stop like its own little town

yeah Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but if you're up for a detour, try Som Tum Nua near Siam Square. their som tam pu pla ra is insane if you like the fermented fish sauce kick. way more pungent than the On Nut spot, just less grilled chicken options
