Hi

Im aged in mid 50s and live 4 hours from Bangkok. The wife allows me a weekend away every month. I mostly go to Bangkok but try other places as well.

Where I live I don't have any friends. Have tried but nothing worked for me.

Any suggestions about how one would go about making friends with westerners or Thai's in Bangkok?

I am open to suggestions.

thanks

The weekend-a-month trips are a solid starting point. If you're open to something structured, I'd suggest checking out the Hash House Harriers running club. There are several chapters around Bangkok, like Bangers Hash or Bangkok Hash, and they meet on Saturdays. It's mostly expats in their 40s and 50s, and the socializing after the run at the local bar is where you'll actually connect with people. You don't need to be a runner either, a lot of people just walk the course and chat.

You could try hanging out at places like the Foreign Correspondents' Club or some of the more relaxed rooftop bars near Sukhumvit, people there are usually open to chat.

idk maybe check out some expat meetups or hobby groups in bkk, the social scene is pretty active for your age bracket honestly

yeah Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but if you're up for a detour, try Som Tum Nua near Siam Square. their som tam pu pla ra is insane if you like the fermented fish sauce kick. way more pungent than the On Nut spot, just less grilled chicken options
