Men from other countries going to Thailand to see freelancers. How do Thai men feel about this and how does this affect things when foreign men try to form meaningful friendships with local Thai men?

Does it complicate things at all? Ex: if a foreign man is trying to befriend you and you have some thoughts on the most likely reason he came to the country

That being said, I understand that there are plenty of non-Thai women freelancers from other countries in Thailand, not sure what percentage they make up though

It's less about the freelancer thing and more about whether you're actually interested in Thailand beyond the surface. I've noticed Thai guys warm up fast when you can talk about something specific like why the khao soi at a particular spot in Silom is worth the queue, or if you know the difference between Isaan and central Thai food. If all you've got is stories about Soi Cowboy, it's going to feel one-sided.

The real barrier is usually language and patience. Most Thai men under 40 speak some English but they're not going to force a conversation with someone who seems like they're just passing through. Stick around long enough to learn a few phrases beyond "sawadee krub" and show up to the same local spot a few times, and the dynamic shifts. There's a Sunday morning cycling group that meets at Sanam Luang, mostly locals, and nobody cares where you're from if you can keep up and grab a coffee after.

honestly most thai guys I've met couldn't care less about the freelancer thing. it's like, yeah we know it happens, but it's not something we think about when making friends. if anything the bigger issue is when foreign guys assume every thai man is cool with that world or wants to talk about it

the real divide is cultural curiosity. I have a thai friend who runs a coffee shop near Ari and he gets annoyed when farangs only want to talk about where to find girls or cheap weed. but if you ask him about the best khao man gai in the area or wanna watch a muay thai fight together, he's all in. show up with genuine interest in something local and nobody's gonna care why you came here originally

one thing that works well is joining a shared hobby group. like there's a running club that meets at Chatuchak park saturday mornings, lots of thai guys and expats mixing there. nobody's asking about anyone's past travels, just talking about pace and routes

Most Thai guys I know just roll their eyes at the whole thing. It's not really a secret that a lot of foreign men come here for that scene, so it's more of a tired joke than a serious grievance. If you're a decent guy who just wants to grab a beer and talk about Muay Thai or whatever, nobody's going to hold the stereotypes against you.

The real complication is more about trust and shared experience. Thai men often bond over local stuff like eating at a specific soi in Ekkamai or complaining about the BTS during rush hour. If you've only been in Thailand a week and your only reference point is Nana Plaza, it's hard to find common ground. Just show genuine interest in normal life, not just the tourist traps, and you'll be fine.

yeah Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but if you're up for a detour, try Som Tum Nua near Siam Square. their som tam pu pla ra is insane if you like the fermented fish sauce kick. way more pungent than the On Nut spot, just less grilled chicken options
