honestly wat mahathat is a solid pick and not as overrun as the big ones. it's near the grand palace but most tourists just walk past it to get to the palace instead of going in. they have a monk chat program where your brother can actually talk to a monk about practice, it's legit.

if he wants something even quieter take the khlong boat from onnut to wat saket but skip the golden mount part. the base area has a small meditation center that gets zero tourists. just be there before 4pm or the monks are done with afternoon chanting.

take the bts to udom suk and then a grab to wat bang na nok. it's a tiny monastery tucked behind a housing estate, maybe 15 mins from onnut. the monks here do daily alms rounds at 7am and they're happy to have guests join them walking through the soi, just bring a small offering of rice or snacks

if he wants something closer the wat at the end of soi onnut 46 has a meditation hut in the back garden. it's literally just a wooden platform under a tree, no signs in english, but the old monk there sits from 6am to 8am most mornings and will gesture for you to join him. bring mosquito repellent

Wat Paknam Bhasicharoen is a good option if your brother wants to see an active monastery without the tourist crowds. It's a bit south of Onnut, about a 20-minute taxi ride, and they have a large meditation community that welcomes visitors. The main hall is impressive but the real draw is the back area where monks do walking meditation, it feels much more like daily practice than a show.

If he's open to a longer trip, take the BTS to Wongwian Yai and then a short taxi to Wat Intharam in Thonburi. It's an old monastery from the Ayutthaya period with a quiet courtyard and almost no foreigners. The abbot there gives short Dhamma talks in English on weekday afternoons if you ask the novice at the front desk.

yeah Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but if you're up for a detour, try Som Tum Nua near Siam Square. their som tam pu pla ra is insane if you like the fermented fish sauce kick. way more pungent than the On Nut spot, just less grilled chicken options
