Upcoming exchange student at Chula from Denmark- Where should I live and what should I know?

I love visiting new places, and I've done my fair share of research on condos and serviced apartments near Chula, but I would like to get more insight from real human beings that have experience with the city.

My budget is max 24000 THB/month and a location close to Chula is most important for me.

I've considered serviced apartments like Parkland Rongmuang, Punica, and Condos like ideo Q Chula Samyang and Ashton Chula.

So far I've booked a stay at a hotel for about a month, and my plan is to visit some of these places I've considered and try to get a rental in-person with a contract from February to end of may (4,5 months). Does anybody have any experience with this and does it seem possible, especially with such a short rental period.

I'm worried i wouldn't not have a proper place to stay if it doesn't work out, which is why I've chosen to post my concerns on Reddit to see what you guys might think about it.

Thanks for reading my post

Your hotel-first plan is smart. Siam Square and the area around Sam Yan MRT have the highest concentration of short-term rentals near Chula, and landlords there are used to semester-long leases for students. Punica on Rama 4 is fine but the walk to campus through that intersection gets old fast in the heat, I'd look at the condos along Soi Chula 16 instead where you're right on the BTS line at Sam Yan.

For a 4.5 month lease at 24k, you'll have better luck with serviced apartments than condos. Condo owners at Ideo Q or Ashton Chula usually want 12-month contracts or charge a premium for short stays, while places like Parkland Rongmuang are built for this kind of arrangement. Just know Parkland has a bit of a dormitory feel and the pool is always packed after 5pm.

If your hotel booking falls through, there are a few guesthouses on Soi Kasemsan 2 that rent by the month for around 12-15k, nothing fancy but they'll hold you over. Also worth checking the Chula student Facebook groups once you arrive, people sublet their rooms mid-semester all the time when they go home.

Lived near Chula for two years as a grad student, so I know the area well. With a 24k budget and only 4.5 months, you're actually in a good spot for something like the Tonson Tower or The Address Siam-Ratchathewi, both are serviced apartments that do short leases without the markup. They're about a 10 minute walk to campus but you're right by the BTS at Ratchathewi, which makes getting anywhere else in the city much easier.

One thing I'd add that nobody's mentioned is the noise from the MRT construction on Rama 4. It's been going on for years and they're still digging tunnels near Sam Yan. If you end up at Parkland or anything on that stretch, ask for a room facing away from the street. Also check if the building has a gym that works for you, some of those older serviced apartments have equipment that's been broken for months and they never fix it.

the hotel-first move is solid, lots of exchange students do that exact thing. for your budget and timeline, i'd actually skip the big condo towers and focus on the older apartment buildings along soi chula 42 or soi chula 46, they're way more flexible with short contracts and you'll get a bigger space for 20-24k. the walk to campus is like 5-7 minutes and you're right next to the little food market where you can get a proper thai lunch for 50 baht

one thing nobody mentions is the noise situation. ashton chula and ideo q are right on the main roads and that construction never stops, plus the bts rumble. if you're a light sleeper go deeper into the soi where it's quieter. also download grab and lineman before you arrive, the sam yan mrt area has a decent food court in the basement of the chamchuri square building that's cheap and open late

if your hotel month runs out and you still haven't found a place, there's a hostel called loy la long on soi kasemsan 3 that does monthly rates around 10k for a private room. not glamorous but you won't be homeless while you sort it out

yeah Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but if you're up for a detour, try Som Tum Nua near Siam Square. their som tam pu pla ra is insane if you like the fermented fish sauce kick. way more pungent than the On Nut spot, just less grilled chicken options
