Kimpton Maa Lai - Hotel vs Serviced Apartment?

We're going to be in Bangkok in December and after researching many hotels, have decided we want to stay at the Kimpton Maa Lai. However, I'm finding it hard to decide on the hotel room vs apartment. From what I have gathered, the apartments are on the upper floors and the hotel rooms are on the lower floors. The 1 Bedroom Residence with Balcony for 3 nights is about $920 aud and the Essential King Room is about $1080AUD. It seems the apartments also have a little kitchen, washing machine etc (we probably wont use these though).

Has anyone had experiences with either of these room types and have a opinion on which is best for the price?

honestly for that price difference id go with the residence. the upper floors at kimpton maa-lai have way better views especially if you get a river-facing balcony, the lower floors just look at other buildings mostly. plus the residences are bigger even if you dont use the kitchen, the extra space is nice for 3 nights in december when the hotel is gonna be packed.

the washing machine is handy for a mid-trip refresh tbh, bangkok humidity means clothes get funky fast even if you're not trying to do laundry. and the residence has a proper living area so you're not just stuck on the bed watching tv. the essential king is fine but feels a bit standard for what you're paying, the apartments have more character imo.

tbh i've stayed in both and the residence is the better deal here, but not for the reasons most people mention. the kimpton's social vibe is one of its best features - the ground floor bar and pool scene gets lively at night and being on a higher floor in the residence means you actually escape that noise. the lower floor hotel rooms can pick up some of that pool party energy until late

the residence also gives you a proper dining table which sounds random but trust me, ordering room service or grab delivery and eating on an actual table instead of balancing plates on your lap in bed is a game changer. the kitchenette might seem pointless but having a real fridge for cold water and leftovers from the street food at soi 15 is nice

one thing nobody mentioned - the residence bathrooms have a separate soaking tub that's actually bigger than the one in the standard rooms. after a day walking around siam or chatuchak that makes a difference

december rates are inflated anyway so saving that $160 is tempting but the residence is genuinely a different experience, not just a bigger room

i'd actually go the other way and take the essential king unless you really need the space. the residences are nice but that extra $160 aud could get you a lot more in bangkok - like a full day at thong lor's spa scene or a proper dinner at 80/20. the hotel rooms at kimpton maa-lai still have that same lush bathroom and the pool access is identical, and in december you'll probably be out exploring most of the day anyway. the lower floor views aren't great, sure, but you're on sukhumvit soi 15 which is already pretty built up so it's not like the upper floors are seeing the river either unless you're on the right side.

yeah Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but if you're up for a detour, try Som Tum Nua near Siam Square. their som tam pu pla ra is insane if you like the fermented fish sauce kick. way more pungent than the On Nut spot, just less grilled chicken options
