honestly it's the bolt drivers that are the worst, they never want to use the meter and always try to haggle a flat rate. grab is usually a bit better but still hit or miss, try just waving down a regular street taxi and make sure they turn the meter on before you get in

yeah the meter thing is key, even outside bolt. a lot of drivers near khao san or sukhumvit will quote you 200-300 baht for a trip that's like 80 on the meter. i just say "by meter" with a straight face and if they argue i close the door and find another, there's always another one within 30 seconds. also try using the grab app's "grabcar" option not "grab taxi", the price is fixed upfront and no meter drama, usually 50-100 more but saves the headache

the bolt thing is real, they're basically independent contractors with no accountability to the app. if you're set on using an app, grab is more consistent but still not perfect. honestly the best luck i've had is just walking a block away from tourist spots and hailing a regular taxi with the meter on, say "meter, please" before u get in and if they refuse just step out. also helps to have google maps open showing the route so they know you're not a clueless tourist

yeah Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but if you're up for a detour, try Som Tum Nua near Siam Square. their som tam pu pla ra is insane if you like the fermented fish sauce kick. way more pungent than the On Nut spot, just less grilled chicken options
