[Serious] Is there a legit venue for entrepreneurs in Bangkok?

I had a… I know this is a commonly asked question from people asking for money, but I'm actually on the other side, so please hear me out. I've recently been made redundant from a job I held in the UK. I had a pretty good salary and was there for over 15 years so the payout is in the 6 figures of GBP after tax (can provide proof). I hold dual citizenship so am thinking of relocating back to Thailand and finding a project I can invest in rather than try to find a new job in London.

All the searches on this sub seem to say that all these meetups are just white dudes in their 30s looking for a gf or crypto bros hunting for their next scheme, but are there any actual legit events in Bangkok?

Btw - if you're going to DM me about a blockchain project, unless you're going to hire me as a dev (Senior Java and DevOps engineer) I am not interested.

the bangkok post thing is real but also check out the asian institute of technology's alumni network. they have a startup incubator on their campus in pathum thani that's been around for decades, way before the current hype cycle. a lot of their spinoffs are in agritech and industrial automation, not consumer apps, so they actually need senior java devs for backend systems that talk to hardware. the founder meetups there are once a month and nobody's pitching tokens

for direct introductions, the bar association of thailand has a list of lawyers who specialize in m&a for small caps. a good one is chandler mh ltd on sathorn road, they handle a lot of the cross-border tech deals and can point you toward companies that need both capital and a technical founder. it's not a venue per se but it's how you skip the noise

also worth looking at the thai-japanese association events at the japanese chamber of commerce building on wireless road. the crowd is older and more conservative but the deals there are in manufacturing and logistics tech, not crypto. you'll stand out as a dev with cash because most of the attendees are sales guys or retired executives, not technical people

If you're a senior Java guy with capital, skip the general meetups and go straight to the tech incubators at the Thailand Science Park out in Pathum Thani. It's a bit of a trek from central Bangkok but that's where the government-backed deep tech startups are, not the barstool entrepreneurs. They run a program called the Software Park Thailand that has actual hardware labs and dev teams working on IoT and logistics platforms, stuff that needs real engineering, not another food delivery app.

For finding deals, get a membership at the British Chamber of Commerce Thailand. Their monthly luncheons at the Landmark Hotel on Sukhumvit Road are full of mid-level executives who know which local SMEs are looking for capital or technical partners. You'll pay 1,200 baht for the lunch but the conversations are miles above any Meetup group. Just wear a jacket, they're stuffy about dress code.

Also worth noting that the Thai government has a SMART Visa program specifically for tech investors and experts. If you go through that channel they'll connect you with their approved list of startups, which cuts out most of the nonsense. The application takes about two months but the people on that list have already been vetted by the Board of Investment.

honestly the happa cafe crowd is solid but if you want something more structured try the thai startup association events, they run quarterly pitch nights at true digital park that actually have real thai vc firms attending. the crowd skews thai but everyone speaks english and theyre not there to network for fun, theyre looking for deals

for your specific background, reach out to a guy named pong at opn (formerly omise), theyre always looking for senior devs and theyre actually building real fintech infrastructure. their office is in thong lor too, might be worth sending a linkedin message even if theyre not hiring publicly

the coworking spaces mentioned are good but i'd also check out the bangkok post's business section, they list legit investment opportunities sometimes. the scammy stuff is usually on facebook groups or line, not in proper publications

one thing nobody tells you - the serious investors here prefer introductions over cold meetups. find a local lawyer or accountant who works with startups, buy them coffee, and ask who they trust. that's how youll find the real deals not the crypto nonsense

yeah Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but if you're up for a detour, try Som Tum Nua near Siam Square. their som tam pu pla ra is insane if you like the fermented fish sauce kick. way more pungent than the On Nut spot, just less grilled chicken options
