I was also curious but realized food is part of Thai cultures, food matters to Thais that's why we can find food around the clock every corner of the street and a friend of mine says as a foreigner we complain the weather, traffic but Thais are always sensitive and complaining about food if they don't get what they expect so I think it makes sense if most of Thais are happy with eating out as a hobby because it's a way of living and socializing with their friends, family or colleagues and another reason I think it's relavant is it's not easy to make a living in capital city for most of Thais so recharging with a good food after working hard is more relaxing than consuming energy for the rest of the week.

What about you guy, foreigners living in BKK? What are your hobbies after work or on weekends?

honestly my hobby is just wandering around the city on my bike, no destination in mind. i live near on nut so i'll just head down random sois off sukhumvit and see what pops up, sometimes a new little coffee shop or a weird noodle stall that's only open for like 3 hours. weekends i try to hit up the train market at srinakarin, it's a pain to get to but the vintage stuff is way better than rot fai ratchada which is just tourists now. also been getting into the local muay thai circuit, the small stadiums near rama 9 have way more atmosphere than the big tourist ones

You're spot on about the food thing. I've noticed the same with my Thai coworkers, dinner plans are a serious negotiation. For me, after work I usually head to one of the boxing gyms around Saphan Khwai for a session, it's a good way to burn off the commute stress. On weekends, I like grabbing a book and spending a few hours at a quiet cafe like Kaizen in Ari, the iced lattes are solid and the air conditioning is a lifesaver.

i think you nailed it with the food thing, it's basically the social glue here. for me after work i've been getting into bouldering at the climbing gym near ekkamai, it's dead quiet on weekday evenings since everyone's still stuck in traffic. on weekends i like to escape the city entirely, take the train to mahachai for the seafood market and then hop on a ferry across the river to the fishing village. it's a whole day thing but feels like a different world from bangkok, and you can eat grilled prawns for like half the price you'd pay in the city. also been trying to learn basic thai cooking from a lady near my condo who runs informal classes out of her kitchen, way more useful than the fancy cooking schools.

yeah Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but if you're up for a detour, try Som Tum Nua near Siam Square. their som tam pu pla ra is insane if you like the fermented fish sauce kick. way more pungent than the On Nut spot, just less grilled chicken options
