IT Market: What Am I Doing Wrong?

Do you think it will get better anytime soon, especially for foreigners? For those of you who hire or are involved in the hiring process, what are you looking for? What do you search for in a resume, and what are your filters?

I've tried to get a ATS-friendly resume. I guess there's some kind of red flag on my resume that's keeping me from breaking into the Bangkok IT market.

I've been in the IT field for about 4 years now and have recently been trying to find a job as a foreigner. It's been a tough year with most of my applications getting rejected before I even get a call. I know my experience might not be extensive enough, and I don't have a formal CS degree (just a bachelor equivalent), but I really need to find a job here.

I'd really appreciate any inputs to improve my resume and increase my chances of showing my motivation and skills.

Thanks in advance!

Your resume format is probably the issue more than your experience level. I've seen ATS systems at Thai companies completely mangle two-column layouts or tables, turning your work history into gibberish. Stick to a single column, use a standard font like Calibri or Arial, and save as a .docx instead of PDF because some older HR systems here still can't parse PDFs properly.

The other thing worth checking is your job titles. If you've been calling yourself "Software Engineer" but the local market uses "Programmer" or "Developer" for similar roles, the ATS won't match. Look at 10 job postings for the role you want and literally copy the job title format they use. Thai recruitment agencies like Robert Walters and Adecco also tend to use their own internal titles, so if you're applying through them, match what they list.

One more thing about the visa piece that hasn't come up: if you're on a dependent visa or marriage visa already, put that clearly at the top of your resume. It removes the sponsorship question immediately and makes you look like less of a paperwork risk. Companies in the Phra Khanong area near the BTS line are more open to hiring foreigners on existing visas compared to those in the outskirts.

honestly the market here is rough for everyone right now, not just foreigners. a lot of local devs with degrees are also struggling to get calls back

if you don't have a CS degree, your resume needs to scream "i can do the job without wasting your time" in the first 3 seconds. put your github or any live projects front and center, not buried at the bottom. thai hiring managers skim fast

what kind of IT are you in? web dev, sysadmin, data? that matters a ton for what they filter on. for example if you're backend, they might look for specific stacks like node or python with real projects, not just certs

also check if you're applying through jobsdb or linkedin vs direct company sites. a lot of the bigger agencies here use ats that auto-kill resumes without certain keywords or formats. try rewriting your summary to match the exact job description wording for each role, not just a generic version

yeah the no-degree thing is a hurdle but not a death sentence here. what's your work permit situation? if you need visa sponsorship that's gonna filter you out of 90% of listings before anyone reads your resume. thai labor law requires 4 thai employees for every 1 foreigner permit at most companies, so small shops just cant do it

look at the big digital agencies and banks instead of startups. companies like aksorn or the major banks in sathorn area are more used to handling work permits and have bigger budgets for it. also check if you have any overpriced certs that look like filler on your resume. thai recruiters i've talked to say they skip anyone with 5+ random certifications but no clear project history

if you're sending the same resume to both a data analyst role and a devops role, that's likely the red flag. pick one lane and make your resume 100% about that lane for now. you can pivot later once you have a local network

yeah Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but if you're up for a detour, try Som Tum Nua near Siam Square. their som tam pu pla ra is insane if you like the fermented fish sauce kick. way more pungent than the On Nut spot, just less grilled chicken options
