For both foreigners and locals living in Bangkok, why did you choose to live in the Asoke area?

In my opinion, it's tourist central, prices are higher, and the traffic is a nightmare. You can find similar restaurants, shops, and shopping malls in other areas of Bangkok.

What are the benefits of renting or owning in that area?

I live in Asoke and honestly, I get why people hate it. The traffic on Sukhumvit during rush hour is a nightmare and the sidewalk around Terminal 21 is basically a contact sport. But I chose it because my office is a 10-minute walk from my condo and the BTS and MRT interchange means I can get to almost anywhere in the city without a taxi. The rent is higher, but I save a couple thousand baht a month on transport and I never deal with the traffic unless I'm heading out of the area on purpose. There's a decent 24-hour food market on Soi 23 that's cheaper than the tourist traps on the main road, and the grocery store at Robinson is usually less crowded than the one at Emporium.

honestly the transit thing is the real answer. i live here mostly because i can get to work in 15 mins and then to silom or sathorn or wherever without ever touching a taxi. yeah the main road is a zoo but the soi life is completely different. soi 22 has some great little local spots and the rent drops significantly once you walk 5 mins off sukhumvit. if you're not commuting through asoke every day it probably doesn't make sense but if you are the time saved is worth the higher cost

ngl if you're looking at asoke as a tourist area you're missing the point. the real value is the short-term rental game. you can get a decent studio near soi 23 for 15k and airbnb it to tourists for 2-3x that when you're out

yeah Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but if you're up for a detour, try Som Tum Nua near Siam Square. their som tam pu pla ra is insane if you like the fermented fish sauce kick. way more pungent than the On Nut spot, just less grilled chicken options
