How to judge which provider of a service to choose, when you do not understand the service?

So, I am here asking about suits. (what did you think it would be about? ;) )

I need one. I want to look good on a formal and important day.

I know nothing about suits but I know that:

a) measured and fitted by a competent, trained tailor is gonna be way WAY better than off the peg.

b) material can be about comfort, or about durability, as much as 'quality'. (Like, a well tailored pure polyester suit is gonna have that used plastic shiny look on the elbows and bum once you wear it 2-3 times).

I need honest advice on b) as much as good tailoring. I want to avoid a poor man's boot as much as possible if I am paying for a professional. A material tailored to be let in or out as you lose gain weight, needs half-decent material to do so, no?

I hear so many horror stories here though about tailors....

How do I find a decent and honest tailor?

P.S. I don't see anything against the rules but feel cliché. I checked the wiki and the rules. I did search and am replying to an old thread. 55, thread...geddit? ;)

You might want to try Narin's Custom Tailor on Soi 23. It's a small shop, not flashy, but the guy has been at it for 30 years and he'll walk you through the whole process without any sales pitch. He'll explain why a half-canvassed jacket is worth the extra 2,000 baht over fused, and he'll show you the difference on a sample piece.

For fabric, don't overthink the weight. A 260-gram wool in a dark navy or charcoal will work for a formal day and still be wearable in Bangkok's humidity. Avoid anything with "stretch" in the name, it means synthetic content that won't breathe and will look cheap after a few wears. If you stick with pure wool from a mill like Vitale Barberis Canonico or Reda, you're safe, those are standard names that any decent tailor here can source and they hold up well to alterations.

Raja's is the obvious answer everyone gives, but honestly you could also try Pinky Tailor down on Soi 12. They're less famous so less rushed, and the old guy who runs it will actually tell you if your fabric choice is crap rather than just taking your money. Bring a picture of a suit you like the shape of, not the color or details, just the silhouette. If they start talking about canvassing and how they do it by hand, that's a good sign. If they just wave at the fabric wall and say "this one good," leave.

The material question is actually the easier part to solve. Go to the fabric district around Charoen Krung Soi 50 and Baan Moh, feel the wools yourself. A good tropical weight wool (around 200-250 grams) will breathe in Bangkok's heat, hold a crease, and let a tailor work with it for alterations later. Pure polyester suits are a waste of money at any price point, but a wool-poly blend around 70/30 can be a practical compromise if you're on a tighter budget.

For the tailor, ignore the ones on Sukhumvit Road with the pushy touts offering "two suits for 5,000 baht." Walk into Raja's Fashions on Soi 4 or August Bespoke on Soi 15 and ask to see their working studio in the back. A good tailor will show you unfinished jackets on the mannequin, explain the canvas construction, and talk about seam allowances. If they just point at fabric books and quote a price, walk out.

It also helps to bring a photo of a suit you like the silhouette of, and a shirt you already own that fits well around the neck and shoulders. That gives them a reference point, and you'll be able to see if they're actually listening or just nodding along.

yeah Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but if you're up for a detour, try Som Tum Nua near Siam Square. their som tam pu pla ra is insane if you like the fermented fish sauce kick. way more pungent than the On Nut spot, just less grilled chicken options
