Hello!

I'm curious if anyone knows any water or architecture restoration focused nonprofits in Bangkok?

Here's what I'm looking for: For water, any orgs that clean up the khlongs, provide recycling pick up services so that less trash ends up in the waterways, or even provides education to families or children about preserving water.

For architecture, something similar to Habitat for Humanity, or even orgs that purchase old properties and turn them into public buildings to visit.

I'd love to volunteer or donate funds if anyone has any org recommendations or maybe orgs that do work in a similar vein!

Thank you! ☺️

there's a group called bangkok river partners that does a lot of work on the chao phraya specifically around bank restoration and cleanup, they've got a program where volunteers go out on longtail boats to pull trash from the water near klong toei market. for architecture, check out the old town cafe on soi mangkon, it's run by a small nonprofit that bought and restored a 1920s shophouse in yaowarat, they do free walking tours on sundays showing how they fixed up the original tile work and wooden beams. both take donations but the shophouse one is always looking for people to help with basic maintenance on weekends

For the khlongs, check out TerraCycle Thailand Foundation. They've been working on canal cleanup around the Phra Khanong area and do regular water quality monitoring. They also run educational programs for kids in communities along the khlongs about waste separation.

On the architecture side, the Siam Society has a restoration fund that's been quietly buying and fixing up old wooden shophouses in the Phra Nakhon district. They've turned a few into small exhibition spaces and libraries. You'll find them off Soi 21 Sukhumvit, but call ahead since their hours are irregular.

If you want something hands-on, there's a volunteer group called Big Trees Project that plants along the canals and does informal talks about water conservation. They're less formal than a nonprofit but they do actual work every Saturday morning.

honestly the best water org i've come across is the yannawa district canal volunteer network, they're not a formal ngo but they've been doing monthly khlong cleanups since 2018 with like 50 regulars. they focus on the sathon area canals and actually work with the district office to install those floating trash booms near the mouth of the khlong

for architecture you might want to look into the pracha nakhon foundation, they're smaller than the siam society but they specifically target abandoned wooden houses in bangkok noi and thonburi. they've restored like 3 houses so far and turned one into a community library near wang lang pier. you can donate through their facebook page but honestly just showing up on saturdays to help sand floors or repaint walls is more useful to them

yeah Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but if you're up for a detour, try Som Tum Nua near Siam Square. their som tam pu pla ra is insane if you like the fermented fish sauce kick. way more pungent than the On Nut spot, just less grilled chicken options
