How to find ferry routes?

I am trying to figure out longer distances. Is google maps not good at understanding ferries in Bangkok or am I not using it correctly? I was checking a particular route- from pier A to pier B. Google gave many train, bus and one ferry option. But when I changed the location to restaurants, both about 100 meters from pier A and pier B respectively, the ferry option just disappeared. (of course changed departure time to 10am for all searches) How do you guys understand and plan ferry routes? Is there some simple thing I'm missing? Checked a couple of sites on google too, all are fairly generic information. Additionally, if anyone could tell me if there are taxi boats as well and how one can hail those, would be appreciated.

fwiw i've had the best luck with the moovit app for bangkok ferries, it actually shows you which pier gate to walk to and which flag boat you need. google maps just doesnt get that a pier is like a mini bus terminal with multiple services

for longer routes the trick is knowing the color system. orange flag boats run all day and stop at almost every pier, thats your safest bet for exploring. if you want to go further like nonthaburi or further south you need the yellow or green flag boats but they skip some stops. theres a map at most major piers showing which flags stop where

taxi boats are easy once you know the drill. at any pier with a longtail docked just walk up and say your destination, they'll quote a price. for canals like khlong saen saep theres a separate network of boats with fixed routes and prices, those are great for cutting across the city but get crowded during rush hour. just look for the orange and yellow boats at the canal piers

The issue is that Google Maps treats every pier as a single point, but in reality a pier like Sathorn has multiple gates for different lines. If you're 100 meters away it might route you to the nearest entrance for the wrong boat service. For the river, the flag system is your best bet - orange, yellow, and green flags each run different distances and stop at different piers. There's no single app that nails all of this perfectly.

For taxi boats, any pier with a "cross-river" sign will have guys waiting with longtails. You don't hail them from the street, you walk to the pier and negotiate. A short crossing like Sathorn to Wat Arun costs around 5-10 baht on the public ferry but a private longtail will be 100-200 baht depending on how you bargain. The trick is to wave them down with a hand signal once they're close to the pier, not while they're mid-river.

honestly google maps is pretty bad with Bangkok ferries, it treats them like bus routes and gets confused by the walking distance to piers. the issue is that many piers aren't actually pinned where they are, so when u set a restaurant 100m away it thinks ur not near the pier anymore

for actual route planning just use the Chao Phraya Express Boat website or the ViaBus app, both have the full timetables and color-coded lines. the orange flag boats are the workhorses, they run every 10-15 mins and cost like 15 baht for most trips. the blue tourist boats are double the price and slower

yeah there are taxi boats, they're called "longtails" or just "taxi boats" at the pier. at bigger piers like Sathorn or Phra Athit there'll be guys with vests yelling destinations, just tell them where u wanna go and they'll quote a price. usually 50-100 baht for short hops within the river, but expect to pay more if ur going into the canals. no fixed schedule, they leave when full or when u pay for the whole boat

yeah Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but if you're up for a detour, try Som Tum Nua near Siam Square. their som tam pu pla ra is insane if you like the fermented fish sauce kick. way more pungent than the On Nut spot, just less grilled chicken options
