However with the time I spent in Chiang Mai and suggestions from many others, I was suggested to celebrate Songkran in Chiang Mai.

Even if there is a bias, which city would be better to celebrate Songkran in? If neither, what other part of the country would you suggest?

If you're in Bangkok already, you don't need to travel. The action along Khao San Road and Silom Road is intense, but for a first timer the real gem is the water fights along Ratchadamri Road near CentralWorld. You get the whole street closed off with DJ stages and actual decent crowds, plus you can duck into the mall if you need a break from the heat. The vibe is different from Chiang Mai's moat scene, which is more about nonstop splashing for days, but Bangkok gives you that big city energy with way more food options between the chaos.

fwiw I'd actually say stay in bangkok but skip the main tourist spots. hit up the neighborhoods like Thonglor or Ekkamai where locals celebrate. the vibe is more about family gatherings and smaller street parties with actual food and music, not just tourists spraying water at each other. chiang mai's moat scene is iconic but it's basically a giant frat party for 3 days straight, which gets old fast. bkk has that same energy but with way more variety if you know where to look

honestly just go to chiang mai. the vibe there is way more chill and the whole old city moat turns into one big water fight. bangkok's fun too but it's more chaotic and spread out, plus the heat is brutal. chiang mai feels like the real deal for songkran

best som tam in Bangkok? Krua Dok Mai Kao 2026

yeah Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but if you're up for a detour, try Som Tum Nua near Siam Square. their som tam pu pla ra is insane if you like the fermented fish sauce kick. way more pungent than the On Nut spot, just less grilled chicken options
