What areas of Bangkok flood badly? Which areas are best to avoid?

Conversely, which areas never flood even in heavy rain, if any? Conversely, which areas never flood even in heavy rain, if any?

another thing worth knowing is that old bangkok areas like rattanakosin island and yaowarat actually handle rain okay because the streets are built on higher ground from old canals. but the problem there is the water comes up from the river when it's high tide combined with heavy rain, so it's more about timing than pure flood risk

for guaranteed dry spots, look at the newer condo towers along the grey line on rama 9 road. the whole extension from phra ram 9 to suan luang was designed with modern drainage and elevated roads so it's rare to see standing water there even after a full day of monsoon rain

if you're looking at the outskirts, rangsit and the future park area are basically a no-go during heavy rain. the whole canal system there is overloaded and it takes hours for the water to drain. i've seen cars floating near zeer rangsit more than once

for dry zones, the area around samyan and siam square is surprisingly good. it's on higher ground and the drainage was upgraded when they built the subway. also the newer parts of bang wa near the bts station are solid because they're basically reclaimed marshland with modern pumps

one spot people forget is the old town around khao san road. the streets there are narrow but they slope toward the river so water runs off fast. just don't go into the side sois during a downpour

ngl the worst flooding i've seen is around the old airport area on vibhavadi rangsit road. that whole stretch from don muang down to the ha yaek lat phrao intersection just turns into a lake during monsoon. i've had to wade through waist-deep water there before, it's no joke

if you want areas that genuinely stay dry, check out the newer parts of thonburi along the bts extension. places like wongwian yai and talat phlu rarely flood because the whole area was developed more recently with proper drainage. also the riverside condos near sathorn pier are built on elevated land so they're fine, just don't expect the same for the old soi streets behind them

one more thing - the area around bang kapi market near the ramkhamhaeng university actually stays pretty dry because it sits on a natural ridge. my friend lives there and she's never had water in her place even during bad storms

yeah Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but if you're up for a detour, try Som Tum Nua near Siam Square. their som tam pu pla ra is insane if you like the fermented fish sauce kick. way more pungent than the On Nut spot, just less grilled chicken options
