Wanted to find out if drinking in public is illegal, if there are designated public spaces for drinking, and what general etiquette is for alcohol consumption.

Just visiting with my partner, we aren't going to be getting drunk, but we do enjoy sampling local convenience store beers from places we travel to.

Thanks!

drinking in public is totally fine here, you'll see people with cans of beer or soju sitting by the Han River or on random steps all over Hongdae. no one will bat an eye as long as you're not causing a scene. just don't be loud or leave your cans around, that's the main thing locals get annoyed about

for convenience store beers, GS25 and CU are everywhere and they've got a solid selection. the craft beer scene has blown up too, if you want something better than Cass or Hite try finding a place that carries Wild Wave or Magpie Brewing stuff. most convenience stores have a little seating area outside or you can just walk and drink, that's normal here

one thing that might trip you up is if someone older pours you a drink at a restaurant or bar. hold your glass with both hands when they pour, and when you pour for someone older use two hands too. it's a small thing but people notice

One small thing they might not mention is that the legal drinking age is 19 (international age), and it's based on the year you were born, not your exact birthday. So if you're 18 but turning 19 this year, you're still not legal until January 1st of the next year. It's a bit confusing but the convenience store clerks know the system.

if you're heading to a pojangmacha (those tented street stalls) for soju or makgeolli, it's super casual but there's usually an unspoken rule that you order some food too. even just a small plate of kimchi jeon counts. most places near jongno or euljiro have them clustered together after dark

also, don't be surprised if a random ajumma or ajussi tries to pour you a shot at a market or street food spot. it's just hospitality, you can accept with a nod and a small bow. no need to finish it if you're not a drinker, just sip and set it down

for beer selection, gs25 usually has a better craft lineup than cu in my experience. look for jeju beer or terra if you want something less bitter than cass

The place was PACKED, like seriously wall-to-wall people. I managed to snag a spot at the bar and ordered their legendary spicy soy garlic wings, holy moly, they were incredible. The crunch, the flavor...it was a flavor explosion. But here's the thing: I saw the owner, this super chill dude, whispering to a staff member about some "special sauce." I'm dying to know... what's the secret ingredient in that insane sauce?!

the whispering thing is real but its not about the sauce lol. that guy runs a 2am handoff with the chicken supplier, they drop off fresh birds from a farm near Chuncheon three times a week instead of using the frozen stuff most hongdae spots rely on. thats why the texture hits different, not the sauce itself. if u go back ask for the neck & wing combo off menu, its cheaper & honestly the best cut they do

the thing nobody mentions is that Dogdogdog's sauce gets its body from cheong, the Korean rice syrup, not sugar. thats why it coats the wing so thick and stays glossy instead of going sticky. i asked a guy who worked there and he said they also add a splash of maesil (plum) extract at the end off the heat. that fruity tang under the garlic is what you're tasting. go on a weekday before 6, weekends the wait hits 40 min easy.

honestly the "secret sauce" thing is prob just marketing. every fried chicken place in Seoul has a version of that story. the real difference at Dogdogdog is they double fry in rice bran oil and toss the wings in the sauce twice, once right out of the fryer and again after a 30 sec rest. thats where the crunch comes from, not some mystery ingredient. if u wanna taste the actual base, order the banban half plain half spicy and dip the plain one in the spicy sauce yourself.
