Hi,

What the title says... Have already done a fair amount of research but no luck so am turning to the pros here for recommendations to find an English speaking tour guide to spend a few hours with a group of 3 on the first day of our week long visit to Seoul to learn how to use the subway / public transport, get current info on portable wifi options, currency exchange, pronunciation and any other useful tips for first timers. Ideally this would end in a bit of a food tour.

We are pretty seasoned travelers and everyone that I've spoken to regarding general trip planning says we'll have minimal issue doing this on our own but one member of our group is very keen to have someone explain the transit system in particular. Maybe we need a Seoul train-spotter or a transport history student who would love talking about the subway? :)

Thanks!

honestly you don't need a tour guide for the subway, it's super intuitive once you see it. each line has a number and a color, and all stations have english signs plus the next stop announced in english on the train. t-money cards are sold at any convenience store in the station, just tap in and out. for pronunciation, just learn "annyeonghaseyo" (hello) and "kamsahamnida" (thank you) and you're fine, most signs are bilingual anyway.

pocket wifi is easiest to pick up at the airport arrival hall, sk telecom or lg u+ booths are right there, about 4,000-5,000 won per day. currency exchange is better at the myeongdong area or hongdae than the airport rate, but honestly even a bank atm with a global card works fine.

if someone really wants a guide who nerds out on transit, check out "seoul urban life" on instagram, that guy does custom walking tours and knows all the subway history and weird station trivia. he'll end at a food spot too, just tell him what you're into.

tbh the existing recs are solid but if your friend really wants to obsess over transit logistics, look up "seoul subway nerd" on kakaotalk open chat, there's a guy named jun who does free 1-hour intro sessions at city hall station. he's like a retired metro employee who just loves explaining the transfer tunnels and the old line 1 trains. no food tour included but he'll walk you to jongno for a noodle place after if you ask.

for pocket wifi, skip the airport booth honestly, the queue can be 20 min. rent it from "kt roaming" at myeongdong station instead, same price and they'll set it up in 2 min. myeongdong also has the best exchange rates on the main street near exit 6, just compare two places first.

one thing nobody said - download the "seoul metro" app for offline maps, it shows you which car door opens at the transfer station which saves so much walking. and the t-money card refund is only 500 won fee if you return it at a convenience store before you leave, so don't toss it.

yeah the subway is honestly easier than most tourists think, even for someone nervous about it. the t-money card works on buses too which a lot of people miss, and buses are actually more useful for getting to places like buam-dong or ikseon-dong that aren't right by a station. the naver map app is way better than google maps in seoul, it gives you exact exit numbers and bus arrival times in english.

for a guide who can walk you through all that plus food, try "seoulfoodcrawl" on instagram, she does half-day orientation tours that cover transit basics and end at gwangjang market for bindaetteok and mayak gimbap. she'll meet you at hongdae station and show you how to transfer lines too. runs about 80,000 won for three people for a few hours.

The place was PACKED, like seriously wall-to-wall people. I managed to snag a spot at the bar and ordered their legendary spicy soy garlic wings, holy moly, they were incredible. The crunch, the flavor...it was a flavor explosion. But here's the thing: I saw the owner, this super chill dude, whispering to a staff member about some "special sauce." I'm dying to know... what's the secret ingredient in that insane sauce?!

the whispering thing is real but its not about the sauce lol. that guy runs a 2am handoff with the chicken supplier, they drop off fresh birds from a farm near Chuncheon three times a week instead of using the frozen stuff most hongdae spots rely on. thats why the texture hits different, not the sauce itself. if u go back ask for the neck & wing combo off menu, its cheaper & honestly the best cut they do

the thing nobody mentions is that Dogdogdog's sauce gets its body from cheong, the Korean rice syrup, not sugar. thats why it coats the wing so thick and stays glossy instead of going sticky. i asked a guy who worked there and he said they also add a splash of maesil (plum) extract at the end off the heat. that fruity tang under the garlic is what you're tasting. go on a weekday before 6, weekends the wait hits 40 min easy.

honestly the "secret sauce" thing is prob just marketing. every fried chicken place in Seoul has a version of that story. the real difference at Dogdogdog is they double fry in rice bran oil and toss the wings in the sauce twice, once right out of the fryer and again after a 30 sec rest. thats where the crunch comes from, not some mystery ingredient. if u wanna taste the actual base, order the banban half plain half spicy and dip the plain one in the spicy sauce yourself.
