Honestly the Cheorwon plain near the DMZ is teh real one, cranes and geese in winter, and the Civilian Control Zone tours run from Dongseoul. Spring is quieter for birds but you get frogs and early warblers. Book the tour bus ahead, it fills up.

yeah and if trains are easier, take the Gyeongchun line to Gapyeong for the cormorants along the Bukhan, though spring floods can wash that out.

Image janet local ·

good call on booking ahead, and pack binoculars cuz the tour buses dont lend them out and the hides are far from teh birds

arrow_drop_up 2 arrow_drop_down

The crane season peaks late January, so if you want real numbers rather than frogs, shift your trip earlier than spring.

arrow_drop_up 1 arrow_drop_down

Winter is really the draw there, spring is more of a maybe. Check the tour schedule before you commit since dates shift.

Crane numbers at the Cheorwon pyeongya depend on ice cover, so a mild season can scatter them before the tours even start.

arrow_drop_up 16 arrow_drop_down

ice cover varies by field, so ask which paddy they mean

arrow_drop_up -1 arrow_drop_down

mild years push the flocks north to the Imjin mouth instead, so check sightings boards before booking anything

Ask the rangers which paddy froze last, they track it daily.

Spring frogs are the loudest at Cheorwon around dusk.

Wildlife Reserve near Seoul: best time to visit in 2026?

A… I've been meaning to check out the wildlife reserve outside the city but I'm not sure when the animals are most active. Is early morning still the move in 2026, or has the reserve changed its hours? Also curious if the shuttle from the subway station is still running on weekends.

late october is the sweet spot, the rut's on and the elk are loud enough to hear from the trailhead. weekdays after 3pm are dead quiet too if u can swing it.

Image cordelia local ·

elk bugling from the west ridge around dusk too

arrow_drop_up 4 arrow_drop_down

Image adelequast local ·

yeah late oct is when the bulls actually start bugling proper, not just the odd practice call in sept. one thing though, the west ridge trail gets muddy after rain so wear boots you dont mind wrecking. u going weekday or weekend?

thursdays especially, most school groups gone by then

Rut peaks first week of October some years, watch the rut reports.

early mornings still win, gates open 6:30 and the deer are out before the buses arrive. shuttle from the station runs weekends but only every 40 min now, so check the board when u get there. bring binoculars, the rental ones are beat.

Binoculars rental closed, bring your own pair.

Good to know, mine fog up in the cold anyway.

The 6:30 gate matters less than the ticket queue, buy online the night before or you'll lose that window.

arrow_drop_up 1 arrow_drop_down

Image dorothee local ·

Honestly the shuttle's pointless on weekends, take bus 9701 from Yangjae and walk in through the west gate instead.
