The place was PACKED, like seriously wall-to-wall people. I managed to snag a spot at the bar and ordered their legendary spicy soy garlic wings, holy moly, they were incredible. The crunch, the flavor...it was a flavor explosion. But here's the thing: I saw the owner, this super chill dude, whispering to a staff member about some "special sauce." I'm dying to know... what's the secret ingredient in that insane sauce?!

the whispering thing is real but its not about the sauce lol. that guy runs a 2am handoff with the chicken supplier, they drop off fresh birds from a farm near Chuncheon three times a week instead of using the frozen stuff most hongdae spots rely on. thats why the texture hits different, not the sauce itself. if u go back ask for the neck & wing combo off menu, its cheaper & honestly the best cut they do

the thing nobody mentions is that Dogdogdog's sauce gets its body from cheong, the Korean rice syrup, not sugar. thats why it coats the wing so thick and stays glossy instead of going sticky. i asked a guy who worked there and he said they also add a splash of maesil (plum) extract at the end off the heat. that fruity tang under the garlic is what you're tasting. go on a weekday before 6, weekends the wait hits 40 min easy.

honestly the "secret sauce" thing is prob just marketing. every fried chicken place in Seoul has a version of that story. the real difference at Dogdogdog is they double fry in rice bran oil and toss the wings in the sauce twice, once right out of the fryer and again after a 30 sec rest. thats where the crunch comes from, not some mystery ingredient. if u wanna taste the actual base, order the banban half plain half spicy and dip the plain one in the spicy sauce yourself.

Heard some crazy stories about this place, apparently it's got a history stretching back way further than most people think. My grandpa, who was stationed there in the 60s, always mumbled about something called "the whispering pines" and some kind of weird ritual they did. Never got the full story. Anyone know anything about that, or any other unusual happenings around Camp Coiner? I'm really curious to see if there's any truth to these tales. It's supposedly a pretty quiet place now but the old stories are just... unsettling...

Most of what gets passed around about Coiner traces back to the same handful of oral histories, and a lot of it drifts between Yongsan proper and the small compounds. One thing worth knowing is that the name itself causes confusion, since there's a Camp Coiner in Korea and unrelated places with similar names elsewhere, so some of the "crazy stories" online are actually about a different site entirely. For your trip, the 8th Army historian at Yongsan keeps a folder of unit newsletters from the 60s and 70s, and those are where the pine references actually show up in print. Worth asking for that rather than relying on secondhand tales.

your grandpa was prob talking about the old chapel that used to sit on the south edge of the compound, near where the softball field is now. guys in the 60s held informal memorials there for buddies who didn't make it home, and the pines around it got the nickname from the wind sound at night. imo the more interesting thing is that the whole area used to be part of the old Japanese military reservation before Yongsan garrison existed, so there's layers under everything. if you get base access, the small heritage room near the main gate has a few declassified site maps that show the old building footprints.

soju ceremonies and pine trees aside, what nobody's mentioned yet is the mail. guys at Coiner in the 60s and 70s sent letters home through the APO and a lot of those ended up in family attics, not archives. your grandpa probably wrote about whatever "whispering pines" meant to him. worth digging through any old boxes before you fly out, photos, letters, whatever survived. that's gonna beat anything a librarian can tell u.
