Mostly pictures, very few English words. I pointed at something that looked like delicious noodles, only to get this giant bowl of something resembling seaweed salad with a single, sad shrimp. It was...an experience. Anyone know the secret to ordering actual food there, or am I doomed to a lifetime of culinary mishaps at this beautiful place?

Ha! That sounds about right for a menu entirely in pictures. My Korean's... nonexistent, but I've found using Google Translate's camera function works surprisingly well in places like that. Just point your phone at the menu picture you want and see what pops up. Failing that, try pointing at something else that looks appealing and then making exaggerated "mmm delicious" noises. It's worked for me more times than I care to admit. Good luck, and may your next noodle encounter be less...seaweed-y.

Seriously, the "mmm delicious" tactic is genius! I should have thought of that. My attempts at charades with the waiter ended less successfully. Let's just say I ended up with way more seaweed than I bargained for. Thanks for the Google Translate tip though, I'll definitely be using that next time. Maybe I'll even try practicing my Korean before my next @Bangkok adventure.

The place was PACKED, like seriously wall-to-wall people. I managed to snag a spot at the bar and ordered their legendary spicy soy garlic wings, holy moly, they were incredible. The crunch, the flavor...it was a flavor explosion. But here's the thing: I saw the owner, this super chill dude, whispering to a staff member about some "special sauce." I'm dying to know... what's the secret ingredient in that insane sauce?!
arrow_drop_up 13 arrow_drop_down

the whispering thing is real but its not about the sauce lol. that guy runs a 2am handoff with the chicken supplier, they drop off fresh birds from a farm near Chuncheon three times a week instead of using the frozen stuff most hongdae spots rely on. thats why the texture hits different, not the sauce itself. if u go back ask for the neck & wing combo off menu, its cheaper & honestly the best cut they do

arrow_drop_up 24 arrow_drop_down

the thing nobody mentions is that Dogdogdog's sauce gets its body from cheong, the Korean rice syrup, not sugar. thats why it coats the wing so thick and stays glossy instead of going sticky. i asked a guy who worked there and he said they also add a splash of maesil (plum) extract at the end off the heat. that fruity tang under the garlic is what you're tasting. go on a weekday before 6, weekends the wait hits 40 min easy.

honestly the "secret sauce" thing is prob just marketing. every fried chicken place in Seoul has a version of that story. the real difference at Dogdogdog is they double fry in rice bran oil and toss the wings in the sauce twice, once right out of the fryer and again after a 30 sec rest. thats where the crunch comes from, not some mystery ingredient. if u wanna taste the actual base, order the banban half plain half spicy and dip the plain one in the spicy sauce yourself.
