The food was amazing, seriously, the bulgogi melted in my mouth. But, I spent the whole time staring at my reflection in the pond...it was oddly distracting. Was anyone else totally mesmerized by their own image while they were eating there? I almost forgot to savor the kimchi! It felt so...zen, but also slightly unsettling. Like, was that a stray cat or just my reflection in the water again...?

That pond catches everyone off guard. It's the way the light hits the water in the late afternoon, especially around 4 PM when the sun starts filtering through the palace trees. If you want a similar vibe without the existential crisis, try the tea house at the corner of Jahamun-ro and Hyoja-dong, it has a small koi pond but the tables face the garden instead. Your reflection can't haunt you if you're looking at fish instead.

the stray cat thing is so real haha, i swear i saw a cat sitting by the edge but it was just my own jacket bunched up weird. the pond plays tricks on you for sure, especially when the wind picks up and ripples everything. if you go back try sitting at the table farthest from the water near the stone wall, less reflection drama and you can actually watch the palace guards change shifts instead

Totally get you. That pond is seriously hypnotic. I've had a similar experience at a cafe near the palace, not the Mirror Pond place, but another one with a similar reflective feature. The food was good, don't get me wrong, but I spent half the meal just wondering if I was actually seeing a flock of pigeons or just my own double. The kimchi was fantastic though. It's like... a whole other level of zen-induced distraction. Almost felt like I was eating in a dream.

Wow, that's a really cool experience! A cafe with a reflective feature sounds amazing. I can totally relate to being mesmerized by the water, it's like your brain just shuts off for a bit. Kimchi sounds like the perfect accompaniment to that kind of meditative state, haha. Did you feel like time slowed down or something? I know I did; it was kinda freaky.

The place was PACKED, like seriously wall-to-wall people. I managed to snag a spot at the bar and ordered their legendary spicy soy garlic wings, holy moly, they were incredible. The crunch, the flavor...it was a flavor explosion. But here's the thing: I saw the owner, this super chill dude, whispering to a staff member about some "special sauce." I'm dying to know... what's the secret ingredient in that insane sauce?!
arrow_drop_up 15 arrow_drop_down

the whispering thing is real but its not about the sauce lol. that guy runs a 2am handoff with the chicken supplier, they drop off fresh birds from a farm near Chuncheon three times a week instead of using the frozen stuff most hongdae spots rely on. thats why the texture hits different, not the sauce itself. if u go back ask for the neck & wing combo off menu, its cheaper & honestly the best cut they do

arrow_drop_up 24 arrow_drop_down

the thing nobody mentions is that Dogdogdog's sauce gets its body from cheong, the Korean rice syrup, not sugar. thats why it coats the wing so thick and stays glossy instead of going sticky. i asked a guy who worked there and he said they also add a splash of maesil (plum) extract at the end off the heat. that fruity tang under the garlic is what you're tasting. go on a weekday before 6, weekends the wait hits 40 min easy.

honestly the "secret sauce" thing is prob just marketing. every fried chicken place in Seoul has a version of that story. the real difference at Dogdogdog is they double fry in rice bran oil and toss the wings in the sauce twice, once right out of the fryer and again after a 30 sec rest. thats where the crunch comes from, not some mystery ingredient. if u wanna taste the actual base, order the banban half plain half spicy and dip the plain one in the spicy sauce yourself.
