Rooms were amazing, service top-notch... but the rooftop bar was kinda underwhelming. It had potential, stunning views, but the cocktail menu felt... basic? Like, seriously? No interesting twists on classics, just your standard fare. So my question is, are there any hidden amazing bars nearby with better drinks and equally awesome views? I'm planning a return trip, and I wanna avoid another let down.

tbh the bar at the top of N Seoul Tower gets a lot of hate for being touristy but their soju-based cocktails are actually solid if you ask for the seasonal menu. the view's obv unbeatable but go on a weekday right when they open at 5pm to avoid the crowd. also check out the little speakeasy on the 4th floor of that building next to the old city wall in Myeongdong, no sign out front just a black door with a brass handle. their menu changes monthly and the bartender used to work at a place in Hongdae known for experimental infusions.

You were staying near City Hall, so try walking over to the rooftop at the Westin Chosun in Myeongdong. It's called The Terrace and it is old school, not flashy, but the view of the old city wall and Nam Mountain is beautiful at dusk. Their cocktail list has a few Korean twists like a perilla leaf gin fizz that actually works. It is easy to miss because the entrance is around the side near the taxi stand, not through the main lobby.

fwiw if you're open to something not strictly a rooftop but still high up, check out the observatory lounge at lotte world tower. it's on the 83rd floor, not a bar per se but they have a proper cocktail program now and the view is just insane, you can see all the way to the mountains on a clear day. the drinks are pricier but they actually put thought into the mix, had a smoked plum whiskey thing there that was way better than it had any right to be. also the elevator ride up is an experience in itself, goes up 500 meters in like a minute

the other thing nobody's mentioned yet is the bar at the top of the gloucester hotel in jongno, it's a total hidden gem. no sign outside, you have to take the service elevator to the 9th floor and then walk up a flight of stairs. their signature drink uses aged soju and honey from a specific apiary in the suburbs, super smooth. the view is mostly the old city and the palace grounds, perfect for when you want something quieter than the river views

The place was PACKED, like seriously wall-to-wall people. I managed to snag a spot at the bar and ordered their legendary spicy soy garlic wings, holy moly, they were incredible. The crunch, the flavor...it was a flavor explosion. But here's the thing: I saw the owner, this super chill dude, whispering to a staff member about some "special sauce." I'm dying to know... what's the secret ingredient in that insane sauce?!

the whispering thing is real but its not about the sauce lol. that guy runs a 2am handoff with the chicken supplier, they drop off fresh birds from a farm near Chuncheon three times a week instead of using the frozen stuff most hongdae spots rely on. thats why the texture hits different, not the sauce itself. if u go back ask for the neck & wing combo off menu, its cheaper & honestly the best cut they do

arrow_drop_up 24 arrow_drop_down

the thing nobody mentions is that Dogdogdog's sauce gets its body from cheong, the Korean rice syrup, not sugar. thats why it coats the wing so thick and stays glossy instead of going sticky. i asked a guy who worked there and he said they also add a splash of maesil (plum) extract at the end off the heat. that fruity tang under the garlic is what you're tasting. go on a weekday before 6, weekends the wait hits 40 min easy.

honestly the "secret sauce" thing is prob just marketing. every fried chicken place in Seoul has a version of that story. the real difference at Dogdogdog is they double fry in rice bran oil and toss the wings in the sauce twice, once right out of the fryer and again after a 30 sec rest. thats where the crunch comes from, not some mystery ingredient. if u wanna taste the actual base, order the banban half plain half spicy and dip the plain one in the spicy sauce yourself.
