Hi! We're in Seoul for two days and want to really experience Korea.

What is a good, authentic, Korean restaurant you suggest? We want to take with us fond memories of Seoul, experience Korean food, hospitality, an authentic (only in Korea or only in Seoul) place. Something, where you'll take your parents or a best friend if it's their first time in Seoul.

Budget is around $750 with moderate alcohol for two adults and a child, location is central Seoul or a quick taxi ride.

Thank you.

tbh with $750 you could do a really memorable meal at a place like Onjium in Jongno. it's right near the palace but not a tourist trap at all, they do modern takes on royal court cuisine and the presentation is gorgeous. kids are welcome and they'll bring simpler versions of dishes if needed. the setting is super elegant but not stuffy, and the staff actually explain the history behind each course which makes it feel special

if you want something more casual but still iconic, try Tosokchon Samgyetang near Gyeongbokgung. it's a massive old school building with a courtyard, super photogenic, and they only serve ginseng chicken soup. your kid will like tearing apart the whole chicken stuffed with rice and chestnuts, and the little side dishes are mild. get there right when it opens at 11am or you'll wait forever

for the second day i'd do a late lunch at a place like Mokmyeoksanbang in Samcheongdong. it's a tiny hanok restaurant with only like 5 tables, the owner cooks everything herself and it feels like eating at someone's grandmother's house. she does a set menu with seasonal ingredients and everything changes weekly. you need to call ahead but it's the kind of place that feels genuinely seoul only, not something you'd find anywhere else

Given your budget and the short timeframe, I'd book a table at Gwangjang Market for lunch one day and do a proper sit-down dinner the other. At the market, head to the stalls near the main entrance for mayak gimbap (those little seaweed rice rolls they call "drug gimbap" because they're addictive) and live mung bean pancakes at the frying stations. Your kid will be entertained watching the ajummas flip them, and you can try a dozen different things for under 50,000 won total. For the dinner splurge, try Samwon Garden in Jongno - it's been around since the 70s and does a killer hanwoo beef bulgogi that melts in your mouth. The whole place feels like a traditional Korean garden inside, and they're great with kids. Just call ahead about the child's age so they set up a proper table setup.

honestly for a first time with a kid i'd skip the fine dining and go to a place like myeongdong kyoja in myeongdong. their kalguksu (handmade noodle soup) and mandu are iconic seoul food that's been around for decades and kids love the mild broth. the service is fast and no-nonsense but in a way that feels very korean, and you'll be in and out for under $50 for all three of you. if you want something a bit more interactive, head to mapo-gu and find a place doing samgyeopsal where they grill at the table - your kid can help cook the pork belly, and the banchan refills are endless. just avoid the tourist traps right by the main palaces, walk two blocks into the side streets and look for places packed with ajummas eating lunch

The place was PACKED, like seriously wall-to-wall people. I managed to snag a spot at the bar and ordered their legendary spicy soy garlic wings, holy moly, they were incredible. The crunch, the flavor...it was a flavor explosion. But here's the thing: I saw the owner, this super chill dude, whispering to a staff member about some "special sauce." I'm dying to know... what's the secret ingredient in that insane sauce?!
arrow_drop_up 14 arrow_drop_down

the whispering thing is real but its not about the sauce lol. that guy runs a 2am handoff with the chicken supplier, they drop off fresh birds from a farm near Chuncheon three times a week instead of using the frozen stuff most hongdae spots rely on. thats why the texture hits different, not the sauce itself. if u go back ask for the neck & wing combo off menu, its cheaper & honestly the best cut they do

arrow_drop_up 24 arrow_drop_down

the thing nobody mentions is that Dogdogdog's sauce gets its body from cheong, the Korean rice syrup, not sugar. thats why it coats the wing so thick and stays glossy instead of going sticky. i asked a guy who worked there and he said they also add a splash of maesil (plum) extract at the end off the heat. that fruity tang under the garlic is what you're tasting. go on a weekday before 6, weekends the wait hits 40 min easy.

honestly the "secret sauce" thing is prob just marketing. every fried chicken place in Seoul has a version of that story. the real difference at Dogdogdog is they double fry in rice bran oil and toss the wings in the sauce twice, once right out of the fryer and again after a 30 sec rest. thats where the crunch comes from, not some mystery ingredient. if u wanna taste the actual base, order the banban half plain half spicy and dip the plain one in the spicy sauce yourself.
