Rail strike - I arrive in Seoul tomorrow (Thursday the 5th). What do I need to know?

What's happening and what do I need to know? What's happening and what do I need to know?

The Korail strike started last week and mostly affects KTX and some regular train services. You'll still get around Seoul fine since the subway runs on a separate system, but if you planned any day trips by train to places like Busan or Gyeongju, expect delays or cancellations. The union and management are still talking so it could end any day, but for now I'd book a bus instead if you're heading out of town. Express buses from Gangnam or the Central City terminal are running normally and tend to be more reliable during strikes anyway.

If you're flying into Incheon, the airport rail is fine since it's run by a different company. But the KTX transfer at Seoul Station is where people get stuck. I'd skip the train entirely and take the express bus from the airport to your hotel area. It costs about 17,000 won and drops you near major districts like Myeongdong or Gangnam without dealing with the station mess.

Also, the strike is affecting some subway lines that share tracks with Korail, specifically parts of Line 1 and Line 3 near the outskirts. Nothing in central Seoul is impacted, but if you're going to Uijeongbu or Ilsan, expect longer intervals between trains. Naver Map is good about flagging those delays in real time.

One thing nobody mentions is that the tourist information desks at Seoul Station are understaffed right now because of the strike. If you need help, the one at Myeongdong or the airport is more reliable. Pick up a T-money card at a convenience store instead.

honestly the biggest headache is gonna be the congestion around seoul station itself. korail workers are picketing near the main entrance so it's a bit of a mess getting through, especially during rush hour. if you're taking the subway to transfer, use the 회현 station exit instead, it's a shorter walk to the platforms and you skip most of the crowd

also worth knowing that some of the tourist trains like the dmz train and the seoul city tour trains are fully suspended for now. i'd swap those plans for a bus tour or just self guided via subway. the strike's also messing with cargo trains so don't expect any same day delivery stuff if you're ordering anything heavy

one kinda random tip - if you're heading to suwon or any of those satellite cities, the subway line 1 runs there direct and it's not affected. takes longer but it's reliable. just avoid rush hour on line 1, it's always a nightmare even without strikes

The place was PACKED, like seriously wall-to-wall people. I managed to snag a spot at the bar and ordered their legendary spicy soy garlic wings, holy moly, they were incredible. The crunch, the flavor...it was a flavor explosion. But here's the thing: I saw the owner, this super chill dude, whispering to a staff member about some "special sauce." I'm dying to know... what's the secret ingredient in that insane sauce?!

the whispering thing is real but its not about the sauce lol. that guy runs a 2am handoff with the chicken supplier, they drop off fresh birds from a farm near Chuncheon three times a week instead of using the frozen stuff most hongdae spots rely on. thats why the texture hits different, not the sauce itself. if u go back ask for the neck & wing combo off menu, its cheaper & honestly the best cut they do

the thing nobody mentions is that Dogdogdog's sauce gets its body from cheong, the Korean rice syrup, not sugar. thats why it coats the wing so thick and stays glossy instead of going sticky. i asked a guy who worked there and he said they also add a splash of maesil (plum) extract at the end off the heat. that fruity tang under the garlic is what you're tasting. go on a weekday before 6, weekends the wait hits 40 min easy.

honestly the "secret sauce" thing is prob just marketing. every fried chicken place in Seoul has a version of that story. the real difference at Dogdogdog is they double fry in rice bran oil and toss the wings in the sauce twice, once right out of the fryer and again after a 30 sec rest. thats where the crunch comes from, not some mystery ingredient. if u wanna taste the actual base, order the banban half plain half spicy and dip the plain one in the spicy sauce yourself.
