The vast majority of them were women. I think this is probably because women are more relationship oriented.

My wife is also wondering how to become friends with Korean women. But she doesn't know how.

The thing that struck me about this is that I almost never see foreign women and Korean women together (friends). Have you ever seen this combination?

Is this because of the language barrier? Or is there a cultural reason that Korean women stay away from foreign women?

i think the youtube thing skews it. foreign women who vlog tend to live in expat-heavy areas and socialize in english, so their sample is other foreigners. meanwhile a korean woman with a foreign friend just... doesnt post about it.

one angle nobody mentions: your wife should look at hobby groups tied to specific neighborhoods, not generic meetups. hongdae pottery studios, seongsu baking classes, climbing gyms in mullae. those fill up with korean women in their 30s who show up every week, and thats where the friendship actually forms. my neighbor met her whole circle at a florist class in yeonnam.

also worth saying, korean women arent avoiding foreign women, theyre avoiding the awkward first hangout where nobody knows the rules. once theres a shared activity doing the work, the foreigner thing fades fast. tell her to commit to one thing for two months before judging it.

honestly the foreign woman + korean woman friend pairing is pretty common in Itaewon and Haebangchon, you just dont see it on youtube because those vids get less views. my wife is korean and most of her close friends are actually foreign women she met through her yoga studio in Hannam.

the real filter isnt gender, its life stage. korean women in their 20s and early 30s who are married with kids basically disappear into family stuff, same as anywhere. the ones who stay social are usually single or have jobs at international companies. language matters less than you'd think too, most younger korean women speak enough english and will happily switch.

tell your wife to skip the "lets be friends" approach and join something recurring instead. a class, a running crew, a book club. koreans build friendships through repeated low stakes contact, not one off meetups. also drinking helps a lot, thats just teh reality here.

The combo is out there, you just have to look outside the expat bubble. My wife is Korean and her closest foreign friend is a woman she met through their kids' school, so the real connector was being moms in the same class, not gender or language.

If your wife doesn't have that kind of built-in setting, tell her to look at church or temple groups, or a neighborhood banchan class. Those tend to be mostly Korean women, and once you're in, they don't really treat you as a foreigner after a few weeks.

The place was PACKED, like seriously wall-to-wall people. I managed to snag a spot at the bar and ordered their legendary spicy soy garlic wings, holy moly, they were incredible. The crunch, the flavor...it was a flavor explosion. But here's the thing: I saw the owner, this super chill dude, whispering to a staff member about some "special sauce." I'm dying to know... what's the secret ingredient in that insane sauce?!

the whispering thing is real but its not about the sauce lol. that guy runs a 2am handoff with the chicken supplier, they drop off fresh birds from a farm near Chuncheon three times a week instead of using the frozen stuff most hongdae spots rely on. thats why the texture hits different, not the sauce itself. if u go back ask for the neck & wing combo off menu, its cheaper & honestly the best cut they do

arrow_drop_up 24 arrow_drop_down

the thing nobody mentions is that Dogdogdog's sauce gets its body from cheong, the Korean rice syrup, not sugar. thats why it coats the wing so thick and stays glossy instead of going sticky. i asked a guy who worked there and he said they also add a splash of maesil (plum) extract at the end off the heat. that fruity tang under the garlic is what you're tasting. go on a weekday before 6, weekends the wait hits 40 min easy.

honestly the "secret sauce" thing is prob just marketing. every fried chicken place in Seoul has a version of that story. the real difference at Dogdogdog is they double fry in rice bran oil and toss the wings in the sauce twice, once right out of the fryer and again after a 30 sec rest. thats where the crunch comes from, not some mystery ingredient. if u wanna taste the actual base, order the banban half plain half spicy and dip the plain one in the spicy sauce yourself.
