Where to Stay in Seoul? Looking for Central but Nicer Area than Myeongdong

I'm planning a trip to Seoul and keep seeing recommendations to stay in Myeongdong for its central location. I looked at some Airbnbs there, but honestly, the street views around Myeongdong didn't feel very inviting to me, lots of concrete, and not the nicest.

Does anyone have suggestions for other neighbourhoods that are still central but might be a bit nicer or have more character? I'd love somewhere that feels vibrant and is convenient for sightseeing, food, and general exploring. Thanks in advance!

honestly i'd check out jongno or insadong area instead. way more character with the hanok vibes and still super central for seeing all the main stuff. plus you're walkable to a lot of the palaces and there's way better food options than myeongdong imo

I'd actually suggest staying in Hongdae. It's lively, has tons of cafes and street food, and the subway connects you everywhere in 15 minutes.

jongno and insadong are fine but honestly theyre packed with tourists too if ur trying to get away from that vibe. try haebangchon or gyeongnidan. still central like a 15 min walk from itaewon station and u get actual neighborhood character

The place was PACKED, like seriously wall-to-wall people. I managed to snag a spot at the bar and ordered their legendary spicy soy garlic wings, holy moly, they were incredible. The crunch, the flavor...it was a flavor explosion. But here's the thing: I saw the owner, this super chill dude, whispering to a staff member about some "special sauce." I'm dying to know... what's the secret ingredient in that insane sauce?!

the whispering thing is real but its not about the sauce lol. that guy runs a 2am handoff with the chicken supplier, they drop off fresh birds from a farm near Chuncheon three times a week instead of using the frozen stuff most hongdae spots rely on. thats why the texture hits different, not the sauce itself. if u go back ask for the neck & wing combo off menu, its cheaper & honestly the best cut they do

the thing nobody mentions is that Dogdogdog's sauce gets its body from cheong, the Korean rice syrup, not sugar. thats why it coats the wing so thick and stays glossy instead of going sticky. i asked a guy who worked there and he said they also add a splash of maesil (plum) extract at the end off the heat. that fruity tang under the garlic is what you're tasting. go on a weekday before 6, weekends the wait hits 40 min easy.

honestly the "secret sauce" thing is prob just marketing. every fried chicken place in Seoul has a version of that story. the real difference at Dogdogdog is they double fry in rice bran oil and toss the wings in the sauce twice, once right out of the fryer and again after a 30 sec rest. thats where the crunch comes from, not some mystery ingredient. if u wanna taste the actual base, order the banban half plain half spicy and dip the plain one in the spicy sauce yourself.
