Any recs, eating alone in hongdea area that doesn't make me feel like a weirdo?

But I went by myself the last 2 trips. Struggling sometimes dining out. I just want to eat but it's a little bit uncomfortable if everyone is in a group. Going to Seoul without eating korean bbq is the saddest. Haha. Might have to join another overpriced food tours again from this Thursday onwards. Any recommendations would be much appreciated. Thanks.

honestly hongdae is like the easiest place to eat solo in seoul lol. tons of solo diners around there, especially the noodle spots and the gopchang places on the side streets near the main exit 9. for kbbq, try the one-person sets at "yeonhwa" on yanghwa-ro, it's a bit hidden but they do a solo menu with samgyeopsal and it's totally normal there. or hit up any of the "mix rice" joints near hongik univ station, those are basically built for one person, you just point and eat.

if u want something more sit-down but not awkward, go for naengmyeon at "myeongdong gyoja" in hongdae, it's fast, everyone eats alone, and the broth is solid. for kbbq without the tour markup, there's a place called "dongwon" behind the cgv, they have a solo special for like 15k won that includes refillable side dishes. honestly no one cares, koreans eat alone all the time, it's just tourists who think it's weird. just bring headphones and order, u'll be fine.

You'll be fine in Hongdae, seriously. The solo dining scene there is way more chill than you'd think, especially if you hit the spots that cater to students and workers grabbing a quick bite. For Korean bbq without the group pressure, check out the pork belly places along the main strip near Exit 8, they've got single portions and the ajummas running them won't blink twice. I've seen plenty of people solo-grilling there, it's just part of the rhythm.

If you want something where nobody even looks up, go for the gukbap spots in the alley behind the Style Nanda building, they're open late and packed with lone eaters hunched over their bowls. That's your move for a proper Korean meal without any weird energy. And skip the food tours, you're paying triple for what you can order yourself with a quick "yogi" and a point.

The place was PACKED, like seriously wall-to-wall people. I managed to snag a spot at the bar and ordered their legendary spicy soy garlic wings, holy moly, they were incredible. The crunch, the flavor...it was a flavor explosion. But here's the thing: I saw the owner, this super chill dude, whispering to a staff member about some "special sauce." I'm dying to know... what's the secret ingredient in that insane sauce?!

the whispering thing is real but its not about the sauce lol. that guy runs a 2am handoff with the chicken supplier, they drop off fresh birds from a farm near Chuncheon three times a week instead of using the frozen stuff most hongdae spots rely on. thats why the texture hits different, not the sauce itself. if u go back ask for the neck & wing combo off menu, its cheaper & honestly the best cut they do

the thing nobody mentions is that Dogdogdog's sauce gets its body from cheong, the Korean rice syrup, not sugar. thats why it coats the wing so thick and stays glossy instead of going sticky. i asked a guy who worked there and he said they also add a splash of maesil (plum) extract at the end off the heat. that fruity tang under the garlic is what you're tasting. go on a weekday before 6, weekends the wait hits 40 min easy.

honestly the "secret sauce" thing is prob just marketing. every fried chicken place in Seoul has a version of that story. the real difference at Dogdogdog is they double fry in rice bran oil and toss the wings in the sauce twice, once right out of the fryer and again after a 30 sec rest. thats where the crunch comes from, not some mystery ingredient. if u wanna taste the actual base, order the banban half plain half spicy and dip the plain one in the spicy sauce yourself.
