I have a car so I'm happy to drive out pretty much anywhere. I checked Naver Map and the list was huge but I didnt see any ratings so I'm not sure where to go.

Unrelated: Only my 2nd day in Seoul, I'm in the dongdaemun-gu area for the first week, did my morning jog/power walk and I was getting thumbs up from the uncles hanging out by some shops at a neighborhood near what looked like a high school. I'm on the larger side, so it was a nice little motivation boost to keep going lol

everyone is really kind and patient as I struggle to pronounce what I'm trying to say in Korean lol tried a couple spots for food and just wow, absolutely delicious. I really love it so far. Looking forward to exploring more. My first real vacation in 10-15 years. Going to spend 2 months exploring as much of Korea as I can.

honestly for hookah in seoul, it's not as big as toronto but there's a solid spot called shisha lounge in hongdae near the main club street. they use quality tobacco and the vibe is chill, not too loud. also check out lounge 2015 in itaewon, it's more of a late night spot with a rooftop that's nice when the weather's good.

that's funny about the thumbs up, the ajusshis out here love seeing people active especially around schools. dongdaemun-gu is solid for exploring, you got the history at heunginjimun gate and the night market nearby. if you're driving, take a day trip to suwon for the fortress, it's like 30 mins and the food there is killer

2 months is a solid amount of time, you'll get to see way more than most tourists. glad you're enjoying the food, it only gets better once you get outside seoul

If you're driving, head to Bundang in Seongnam, about 40 minutes south of Dongdaemun. There's a spot called Nargile House that's run by a Turkish guy, and they use proper coconut coals and washable hoses, which is rare here. The menu is smaller than the big lounges but the quality is consistent, and the interior feels more like a real lounge than a K-cafe with hookah tacked on.

That route from Dongdaemun up to Naksan Park is a good call for your morning walks, the fortress wall path gives you a different view of the city each time. Since you've got a car, drive out to the east coast one weekend, Sokcho is about 2.5 hours and the raw fish market there is a whole different experience from Seoul's food scene.

Two months is going to change how you see the country, you'll get past the tourist layer and start noticing the small neighborhood rhythms. The ajusshi thumbs up is just the beginning, wait until you start getting food recommendations from random old ladies at the market.

Shisha Sarang in Jongno is worth the drive from Dongdaemun, it's about 10 minutes. The owner imports the tobacco himself and knows his stuff, he'll chat with you about flavors if it's not too busy. It's underground and small, not flashy, but the smoke is thick and smooth.

The thumbs up thing will keep happening if you're out early, especially around the older neighborhoods. There's a solid loop from Dongdaemun up towards Naksan Park, great views of the city wall and less crowded than the main tourist paths.

If you're spending two months, don't skip Gyeongju. It's about 4 hours by car, but the ancient tombs and temples are unlike anything else in Korea. The drive down is easy highway most of the way, and there's a good kalguksu place near the Daereungwon tomb complex that's been there for decades.

The place was PACKED, like seriously wall-to-wall people. I managed to snag a spot at the bar and ordered their legendary spicy soy garlic wings, holy moly, they were incredible. The crunch, the flavor...it was a flavor explosion. But here's the thing: I saw the owner, this super chill dude, whispering to a staff member about some "special sauce." I'm dying to know... what's the secret ingredient in that insane sauce?!
arrow_drop_up 13 arrow_drop_down

the whispering thing is real but its not about the sauce lol. that guy runs a 2am handoff with the chicken supplier, they drop off fresh birds from a farm near Chuncheon three times a week instead of using the frozen stuff most hongdae spots rely on. thats why the texture hits different, not the sauce itself. if u go back ask for the neck & wing combo off menu, its cheaper & honestly the best cut they do

arrow_drop_up 24 arrow_drop_down

the thing nobody mentions is that Dogdogdog's sauce gets its body from cheong, the Korean rice syrup, not sugar. thats why it coats the wing so thick and stays glossy instead of going sticky. i asked a guy who worked there and he said they also add a splash of maesil (plum) extract at the end off the heat. that fruity tang under the garlic is what you're tasting. go on a weekday before 6, weekends the wait hits 40 min easy.

honestly the "secret sauce" thing is prob just marketing. every fried chicken place in Seoul has a version of that story. the real difference at Dogdogdog is they double fry in rice bran oil and toss the wings in the sauce twice, once right out of the fryer and again after a 30 sec rest. thats where the crunch comes from, not some mystery ingredient. if u wanna taste the actual base, order the banban half plain half spicy and dip the plain one in the spicy sauce yourself.
