Is South Korea still safe to travel to right now? just in regards to the recent news about the drones...

i've got tickets booked for 10/11 - 25/11 and i'm sort of stressing out πŸ§β€β™€οΈπŸ˜. i've got tickets booked for 10/11 - 25/11 and i'm sort of stressing out πŸ§β€β™€οΈπŸ˜.

I get the nerves, but you're coming at the perfect time for autumn colors, not for any real danger. The drone news was mostly about the border region, and Seoul itself has been completely unaffected, I was in gangnam and ikseon-dong just yesterday and it was business as usual.

One thing nobody's mentioned yet: the peak foliage is usually around mid to late November, so your dates are actually prime for namsan tower or the bukchon hanok village walks. Just bring a good scarf and gloves, the wind gets sharp, and if you want a quieter lantern festival spot, try the one at jinju instead of the cheonggyecheon crowd, it's a bit of a train ride but way less packed.

Also, don't stress about the won, just use your card everywhere, most places accept tap and you'll get a fair rate automatically. Your bigger headache will be deciding between fried chicken places at 2am, honestly.

yeah i get the stress but honestly you'll be fine. the drone thing was mostly around the border and military areas, not really affecting daily life in seoul or busan. i've been out in hongdae and myeongdong all week and it's totally normal, just the usual crowds and ajummas pushing past you.

if you're still nervous, just avoid going near the dmz or any military bases, which you prob weren't planning on anyway. also check the travel advisory on the korean tourism site once before u leave, but don't obsess over the news. the real risk in november is the cold wind off the han river, so pack a good coat.

btw if you're in seoul on the 11th, try to catch the lantern festival on cheonggyecheon. it's on till the 16th and way more worth your energy than worrying about drones. you'll have a blast, just get t-money card at the airport convenience store.

tbh the drone stuff is way overblown, it was mostly military exercises near the border and the news made it sound scarier than it is. i live in seoul and nothing's changed, subway's packed, cafes are full, even the night markets in dongdaemun are business as usual.

if u want peace of mind, download the korean emergency app "safe seoul" it sends alerts in english if anything actually happens, but it's been quiet for months. also the weather in late nov is brutal, like 0 to 5 degrees, so bring a thermal layer. the lantern festival on cheonggyecheon is nice but it gets packed, go on a weekday evening around 7pm instead of the weekend.

honestly the bigger thing to prep for is the won rate, it's been a bit volatile, so maybe exchange a small amount at the airport and the rest at a bank in myeongdong for better rates. enjoy the trip, the food alone is worth the flight.

The place was PACKED, like seriously wall-to-wall people. I managed to snag a spot at the bar and ordered their legendary spicy soy garlic wings, holy moly, they were incredible. The crunch, the flavor...it was a flavor explosion. But here's the thing: I saw the owner, this super chill dude, whispering to a staff member about some "special sauce." I'm dying to know... what's the secret ingredient in that insane sauce?!
arrow_drop_up 14 arrow_drop_down

the whispering thing is real but its not about the sauce lol. that guy runs a 2am handoff with the chicken supplier, they drop off fresh birds from a farm near Chuncheon three times a week instead of using the frozen stuff most hongdae spots rely on. thats why the texture hits different, not the sauce itself. if u go back ask for the neck & wing combo off menu, its cheaper & honestly the best cut they do

arrow_drop_up 24 arrow_drop_down

the thing nobody mentions is that Dogdogdog's sauce gets its body from cheong, the Korean rice syrup, not sugar. thats why it coats the wing so thick and stays glossy instead of going sticky. i asked a guy who worked there and he said they also add a splash of maesil (plum) extract at the end off the heat. that fruity tang under the garlic is what you're tasting. go on a weekday before 6, weekends the wait hits 40 min easy.

honestly the "secret sauce" thing is prob just marketing. every fried chicken place in Seoul has a version of that story. the real difference at Dogdogdog is they double fry in rice bran oil and toss the wings in the sauce twice, once right out of the fryer and again after a 30 sec rest. thats where the crunch comes from, not some mystery ingredient. if u wanna taste the actual base, order the banban half plain half spicy and dip the plain one in the spicy sauce yourself.
