We went for a few days on an Asia trip, it was our first time there, and we had just spent 2 weeks in Japan. I always heard how Seoul rivals Tokyo In cleanliness and pricing and most ways, but after two days we were very shocked at how dirty it was, the lack of walkability compared to other Asian cities, and the food was outrageously expensive for the quality and quantity. It feels very westernized in the wrong ways. Basically all of the inconveniences of the US, just safer. Did anyone else feel this way or did we just set our expectations too high?

Edit: The airport was fantastic, exceeded all expectations, getting to the city was easy. We were south of the river which from the comments was not the best place to be. We did venture around Itaewon and that specifically was disappointing. It felt like a dive bar district in most American cities. At no point did I say I didn't like Seoul, I just expected a different experience. Most of my comments were in comparison to other Asian cities I've spent time in; BKK, KL, Singapore, Beijing, others. I just didn't expect Seoul to feel as western as it did and that was shocking/disappointing; I go to Asia to get away from car dependency, price gouging, etc. 20000 won for a plate of sliced beef and peppers in a small hole in the wall shop is outrageous in any country. I've been to some very rough areas of the world but I went in with expectations of that, so I was not disappointed, I expected Seoul to be on par with Tokyo and KL and it just was not, based on my experience. Next time I will visit different areas and have a different experience, it was a quick trip on our way to other places so for the short time I was there it took me by surprise.

Also- I'm from Europe, not USA

The place was PACKED, like seriously wall-to-wall people. I managed to snag a spot at the bar and ordered their legendary spicy soy garlic wings, holy moly, they were incredible. The crunch, the flavor...it was a flavor explosion. But here's the thing: I saw the owner, this super chill dude, whispering to a staff member about some "special sauce." I'm dying to know... what's the secret ingredient in that insane sauce?!

the whispering thing is real but its not about the sauce lol. that guy runs a 2am handoff with the chicken supplier, they drop off fresh birds from a farm near Chuncheon three times a week instead of using the frozen stuff most hongdae spots rely on. thats why the texture hits different, not the sauce itself. if u go back ask for the neck & wing combo off menu, its cheaper & honestly the best cut they do

the thing nobody mentions is that Dogdogdog's sauce gets its body from cheong, the Korean rice syrup, not sugar. thats why it coats the wing so thick and stays glossy instead of going sticky. i asked a guy who worked there and he said they also add a splash of maesil (plum) extract at the end off the heat. that fruity tang under the garlic is what you're tasting. go on a weekday before 6, weekends the wait hits 40 min easy.

honestly the "secret sauce" thing is prob just marketing. every fried chicken place in Seoul has a version of that story. the real difference at Dogdogdog is they double fry in rice bran oil and toss the wings in the sauce twice, once right out of the fryer and again after a 30 sec rest. thats where the crunch comes from, not some mystery ingredient. if u wanna taste the actual base, order the banban half plain half spicy and dip the plain one in the spicy sauce yourself.
