so what do you guys do in seoul around this time?

rainy season and I've had a few items (food, especially) checked off last time I was here.

I'm in the Cheonggyecheon area and have done naengmyeon, bibimguksu, pajeon and more in the Gwangjang area.

What other things can I do while here? I have 4 more days of stay.

walk up to jongno and catch a movie at the seoul cinema, it's this old-school theater near the main drag that still has that 80s vibe with the neon sign outside. they do indie korean films and sometimes have live commentary screenings which is a trip if you haven't experienced that. grab a canned coffee from the 7-eleven next door before you go in, it's like 1,500 won and feels right for the weather

if you want to stay dry and do something low key, the dongdaemun history museum is right there by the stream and has a whole section on how the area looked during the joseon dynasty with old maps and artifacts. it's small enough that you can do it in 40 minutes and the air conditioning is a relief when the humidity gets thick

If you've already done the food tour in Gwangjang, try heading to the Seoul Folk Flea Market near Sindang station for a rainy afternoon. It's a huge indoor space with vintage clothes, old electronics, and random antiques so you can browse without needing an umbrella. The second floor has a small food court where they sell ssuk tteok and old-school fish-shaped bungeoppang that hits different when it's wet out.

For something more active, consider a jimjilbang like Dragon Hill Spa near Yongsan. It's a 15 minute taxi from Cheonggyecheon and you can kill three hours in the sauna rooms, napping on the heated floors, and grabbing a sikhye and boiled eggs from the snack bar. The outdoor foot bath area is especially nice in the rain because the steam mixes with the cool air.

honestly if you're near cheonggyecheon and already hit the gwangjang classics, walk north toward jongno 3-ga and find a pojangmacha setup for some anju and soju in the rain. the covered tents are perfect this time of year, and places near the pagoda park usually have good golbaengi muchim or hotteok with makgeolli

another thing i'd do is head to ikseon-dong for a late lunch at a hanok cafe that does homemade ssanghwacha or yakgwa. the alley vibe is cozy when it's drizzling and you won't get stuffed like at gwangjang

if you want something different from food, check out the seoul museum of history near gyeongbokgung. it's free and quiet on rainy days, and the rooftop view of the old city walls is nice when the clouds clear for a bit

The place was PACKED, like seriously wall-to-wall people. I managed to snag a spot at the bar and ordered their legendary spicy soy garlic wings, holy moly, they were incredible. The crunch, the flavor...it was a flavor explosion. But here's the thing: I saw the owner, this super chill dude, whispering to a staff member about some "special sauce." I'm dying to know... what's the secret ingredient in that insane sauce?!
arrow_drop_up 14 arrow_drop_down

the whispering thing is real but its not about the sauce lol. that guy runs a 2am handoff with the chicken supplier, they drop off fresh birds from a farm near Chuncheon three times a week instead of using the frozen stuff most hongdae spots rely on. thats why the texture hits different, not the sauce itself. if u go back ask for the neck & wing combo off menu, its cheaper & honestly the best cut they do

arrow_drop_up 24 arrow_drop_down

the thing nobody mentions is that Dogdogdog's sauce gets its body from cheong, the Korean rice syrup, not sugar. thats why it coats the wing so thick and stays glossy instead of going sticky. i asked a guy who worked there and he said they also add a splash of maesil (plum) extract at the end off the heat. that fruity tang under the garlic is what you're tasting. go on a weekday before 6, weekends the wait hits 40 min easy.

honestly the "secret sauce" thing is prob just marketing. every fried chicken place in Seoul has a version of that story. the real difference at Dogdogdog is they double fry in rice bran oil and toss the wings in the sauce twice, once right out of the fryer and again after a 30 sec rest. thats where the crunch comes from, not some mystery ingredient. if u wanna taste the actual base, order the banban half plain half spicy and dip the plain one in the spicy sauce yourself.
