My husband and I will be bringing along our toddler who will be just short of 2 years old. I am a huge foodie and would love to have a mix of hole in the wall/traditional fare, and some stuff that is more unique or special, but I don't know how it is eating with a toddler in Seoul. I like to build out an itinerary around food when I travel (lol) so I'd love any recommendations for places that are good but also toddler friendly. And if you know if reservations are required, that would be great too! Thank you!

Will also take recs on toddler friendly activities too! Thanks!

honestly you'll be fine with a toddler in seoul, koreans love kids and restaurants are used to them. for hole in the wall stuff, try gwangjang market for bibimbap and bindaetteok, just go early like 11am before it gets packed, and your kid can sit on the floor mats in the side alleys. for something special, i'd book a lunch at mingles, they're super accommodating with kids and have a tasting menu that's not too long, just call ahead for a high chair.

for toddler activities, seoul forest is great, there's a huge playground and a deer pen, plus it's flat so strollers are easy. also check out the children's museum in seoul grand park, it's indoors and has hands on stuff for that age, but reserve online first.

october weather is perfect for eating outside, so pocha tents in hongdae or apgujeong are fun with a little one, just grab some tteokbokki and fish cakes, no reservations needed.

For traditional Korean food with a toddler, head to Samcheong-dong. There's a place called Samcheongdong Sujebi that does handmade dough soup, it's mild and easy for little ones to eat, and they have cushion seating on the floor where kids can wiggle around. No reservations needed, just go right when they open at 11:30 to beat the lunch rush.

For something a bit more special, try a hanjeongsik place like Gogung in Insadong. They serve a set meal with lots of small banchan, so you can let your toddler pick and choose what they like. The staff there are used to families and will bring a kids' bowl and spoon without you asking. Reservations aren't required for lunch but dinner can get busy on weekends.

October is also great for outdoor street food in Mangwon Market. It's less touristy than Gwangjang, more local families around, and there's a small playground nearby at Mangwon Park. Grab some hotteok and kimbap from the stalls, let your kid run around the park after.

my go-to with my own kid when he was that age was myeongdong kyoja for their kalguksu. it's a big open space, quick service, and the noodle soup is mild enough for a toddler to eat, just ask for an extra bowl and they'll split the portion. no reservations, just walk in and they'll seat you fast even at peak times bc they turnover tables quick.

for something a bit more special but still relaxed, try onjium in jongno for a lunch hanjeongsik. they have a private room if you call ahead, and the set menu changes seasonally so october should have some nice mushroom and persimmon dishes. the staff will bring out a kids portion of rice and soup without fuss.

as for toddler activities, the seoul national university children's garden in gwanak is way less crowded than seoul grand park, has a sandpit and water play area that's still open in october if it's warm, and there's a good cafe right next to it called garden cafe that does decent americanos and pastries. perfect for a morning out before nap time

The place was PACKED, like seriously wall-to-wall people. I managed to snag a spot at the bar and ordered their legendary spicy soy garlic wings, holy moly, they were incredible. The crunch, the flavor...it was a flavor explosion. But here's the thing: I saw the owner, this super chill dude, whispering to a staff member about some "special sauce." I'm dying to know... what's the secret ingredient in that insane sauce?!
arrow_drop_up 14 arrow_drop_down

the whispering thing is real but its not about the sauce lol. that guy runs a 2am handoff with the chicken supplier, they drop off fresh birds from a farm near Chuncheon three times a week instead of using the frozen stuff most hongdae spots rely on. thats why the texture hits different, not the sauce itself. if u go back ask for the neck & wing combo off menu, its cheaper & honestly the best cut they do

arrow_drop_up 24 arrow_drop_down

the thing nobody mentions is that Dogdogdog's sauce gets its body from cheong, the Korean rice syrup, not sugar. thats why it coats the wing so thick and stays glossy instead of going sticky. i asked a guy who worked there and he said they also add a splash of maesil (plum) extract at the end off the heat. that fruity tang under the garlic is what you're tasting. go on a weekday before 6, weekends the wait hits 40 min easy.

honestly the "secret sauce" thing is prob just marketing. every fried chicken place in Seoul has a version of that story. the real difference at Dogdogdog is they double fry in rice bran oil and toss the wings in the sauce twice, once right out of the fryer and again after a 30 sec rest. thats where the crunch comes from, not some mystery ingredient. if u wanna taste the actual base, order the banban half plain half spicy and dip the plain one in the spicy sauce yourself.
