Hi hello~

I don't really know how to use reddit, but meetup doesn't have anything but language exchange in this country, so here I am!! I'm wondering if anyone's interested in playing an escape room (or two, or ten)? Escape rooms are essentially where you're locked in a room and you gotta solve some puzzles, find some codes to exit the room within an hour~ They're usually spooky and rarely actually scary.

I'll be here until Saturday 8/24/24 so anytime before then is good! I'm specifically interested in XCape or Seoul Escape rooms at any Seoul location. I'm also open to other companies if you have a recommendation!! vv flexible \o/ alsooo price per person is generally under 30,000 won per player.

Message me any questions~ I'll be checking this regularly until I leave I guess? not sure if reddit sends you notifications for comments... but I hope to meet some of you cool people!

Edit: also looking for people to eat with since apparently its extremely hard to eat nice food here without a second person TToTT other things i'd like to do include going to a VR cafe and maybe some culture classes!

XCape in Hongdae is good but their Sinchon location has a room called "The Cabin" that's genuinely creepy if you want spooky, runs 28,000 won per person. for food solo, try the kimbap chain shops or any place in Insadong where they serve dolsot bibimbap, staff are used to single diners there

i'd skip the big VR chains and hit up SmileVR near Jonggak, it's 12,000 won for 30 mins and they have that horror shooter game that's actually fun alone or with a stranger. also if you want a culture class, the National Museum of Korea does free guided tours in english at 10am on weekdays, no booking needed

honestly XCape in Hongdae is solid but if you're open to trying something different, check out Room Escape Cafe in Gangnam. their rooms are more narrative-driven and the production value is wild, like actual sets not just cheap props. runs about 25,000 won per person for the harder ones

for food solo struggle is real, try hongdae's gopchang alley or any pojangmacha where you can sit at the counter and eat alone without weird looks. also jongno has those old-school kalguksu places where nobody cares if ur by yourself

VR cafes are everywhere in gangnam but there's a small one near euljiro station called VR Station that's cheaper and less crowded than the big chains. 15,000 won for 30 mins usually

The place was PACKED, like seriously wall-to-wall people. I managed to snag a spot at the bar and ordered their legendary spicy soy garlic wings, holy moly, they were incredible. The crunch, the flavor...it was a flavor explosion. But here's the thing: I saw the owner, this super chill dude, whispering to a staff member about some "special sauce." I'm dying to know... what's the secret ingredient in that insane sauce?!
arrow_drop_up 15 arrow_drop_down

the whispering thing is real but its not about the sauce lol. that guy runs a 2am handoff with the chicken supplier, they drop off fresh birds from a farm near Chuncheon three times a week instead of using the frozen stuff most hongdae spots rely on. thats why the texture hits different, not the sauce itself. if u go back ask for the neck & wing combo off menu, its cheaper & honestly the best cut they do

arrow_drop_up 24 arrow_drop_down

the thing nobody mentions is that Dogdogdog's sauce gets its body from cheong, the Korean rice syrup, not sugar. thats why it coats the wing so thick and stays glossy instead of going sticky. i asked a guy who worked there and he said they also add a splash of maesil (plum) extract at the end off the heat. that fruity tang under the garlic is what you're tasting. go on a weekday before 6, weekends the wait hits 40 min easy.

honestly the "secret sauce" thing is prob just marketing. every fried chicken place in Seoul has a version of that story. the real difference at Dogdogdog is they double fry in rice bran oil and toss the wings in the sauce twice, once right out of the fryer and again after a 30 sec rest. thats where the crunch comes from, not some mystery ingredient. if u wanna taste the actual base, order the banban half plain half spicy and dip the plain one in the spicy sauce yourself.
