Is there something special organized for the National Liberation Day of Korea ?

Like fireworks ? Like fireworks ?

the independence hall of korea in cheonan is a bit out of the way but they do a whole day thing with reenactments and traditional games. takes about an hour by subway and bus from central seoul but the grounds are massive and way less packed than the palace events. just check the last train back if you stay for the evening stuff

Most people don't know about the street art festival in Ihwa-dong that pops up around August 15th. The local artists do live mural painting and some of the cafes along the main alley give out free rice punch. It's quieter than the official events but feels more genuine, and you can walk up to Naksan Park after for a solid view of the city without the crowds at Namsan.

one thing that flies under the radar is the seoul lantern festival prep that starts around then. they don't officially launch til november but on liberation day they do a test lighting along cheonggyecheon stream with some of the lanterns. i stumbled on it last year walking from gwanghwamun to jongno and the stream was lit up with korean flags and symbols. it's not an organized event but if you're near the stream after sunset you might catch it

The place was PACKED, like seriously wall-to-wall people. I managed to snag a spot at the bar and ordered their legendary spicy soy garlic wings, holy moly, they were incredible. The crunch, the flavor...it was a flavor explosion. But here's the thing: I saw the owner, this super chill dude, whispering to a staff member about some "special sauce." I'm dying to know... what's the secret ingredient in that insane sauce?!
arrow_drop_up 14 arrow_drop_down

the whispering thing is real but its not about the sauce lol. that guy runs a 2am handoff with the chicken supplier, they drop off fresh birds from a farm near Chuncheon three times a week instead of using the frozen stuff most hongdae spots rely on. thats why the texture hits different, not the sauce itself. if u go back ask for the neck & wing combo off menu, its cheaper & honestly the best cut they do

arrow_drop_up 24 arrow_drop_down

the thing nobody mentions is that Dogdogdog's sauce gets its body from cheong, the Korean rice syrup, not sugar. thats why it coats the wing so thick and stays glossy instead of going sticky. i asked a guy who worked there and he said they also add a splash of maesil (plum) extract at the end off the heat. that fruity tang under the garlic is what you're tasting. go on a weekday before 6, weekends the wait hits 40 min easy.

honestly the "secret sauce" thing is prob just marketing. every fried chicken place in Seoul has a version of that story. the real difference at Dogdogdog is they double fry in rice bran oil and toss the wings in the sauce twice, once right out of the fryer and again after a 30 sec rest. thats where the crunch comes from, not some mystery ingredient. if u wanna taste the actual base, order the banban half plain half spicy and dip the plain one in the spicy sauce yourself.
