Is it possible or unreasonable to become a marine biologist in Seoul?

I was wondering if it is difficult or unreasonable to try and go for this goal or path. Also I know language level is very important. By the time I go there though I would be and should be around low fluent level. Is this possible? And if so how hard will it to be to go for a position like this as a foreigner and will my qualifications have to be any different?

I have been copying and pasting this in subreddits that are slightly related so to add more onto this. I know Seoul is not at the coast of Korea so I know it is better to post this in other subreddits that are Korean based but I was curious as to if I was to work at a aquarium in Seoul does anybody know the usual qualifications for jobs like this in Seoul?

if you're set on Seoul specifically, the aquarium scene is basically COEX and Lotte World Aquarium in Jamsil, and neither is really a research shop. Lotte's husbandry team is small and they hire mostly through Korean uni networks, so a cold application from abroad rarely lands. For actual marine bio work the money and labs are at KIOST in Geoje, NIFS in Busan, and Jeju's MABIK, plus the national parks marine office. One thing nobody mentioned: a lot of foreign researchers here come in on the E-7 or the specific research visa after a Korean professor already wants them, so your best move is emailing profs at SNU's School of Earth and Environmental Sciences or the KIOST campus in Geoje before you even finish your masters. Language at low fluent is fine for lab English but you'll need TOPIK 4+ for most visa and HR paperwork, so don't sleep on that.

honestly it's not impossible but it's gonna be an uphill climb. Seoul is landlocked so most marine bio work happens in Busan or on Jeju island where the big research institutes are. If you're set on Seoul though, the COEX Aquarium in Gangnam is your best bet for aquarium work but those jobs are competitive and don't pay great

for a phd or masters you'd be looking at SNU or Yonsei maybe, they have marine science programs but the field work is all coastal. language wise low fluent is prob enough for daily life but academic Korean is a whole different beast, most research papers are in English though so that helps. your US degree will be respected but they'll wanna see you have connections here already, maybe reach out to professors at KORDI or KIOST before you even apply

the COEX aquarium gig is mostly husbandry and guest stuff, not real research. pay is like 2.2 to 2.6 mil a month starting and they lean hard on Korean for the public-facing side. if you actually want to do science, KIOST has a Seoul office but the marine bio labs sit in Geoje and Busan, so you'd end up commuting or relocating anyway. ngl for a foreigner the visa route matters more than the degree, an E-7 research visa wants a sponsoring institute and they rarely sponsor for entry level.

Adventure Park jobs in Seoul 2026: what do they pay?

What does an hourly wage there actually come to after tax, and can anyone realistically cover rent and living costs in Seoul on it? I'd like to hear from people who've done a season rather than the job posting figures.

The 4대보험 hit is real but the bigger issue is hours getting cut in the rainy stretch of 장마, so your monthly total swings a lot. I'd ask current staff about the actual shift schedule before signing, not the posted rate.

Image birga local ·

장마 shifts get cut first, ask about 우천 대체 근무

arrow_drop_up 5 arrow_drop_down

Image sybilla local ·

for real, and the rainy day shifts they swap you into are usually shorter, so ask how many actual hours a week you'd get

arrow_drop_up 1 arrow_drop_down

Image babette local ·

also worth knowing that shift cuts depend on which attraction you're assigned to. indoor rides keep running through the wet weeks so those crews stay close to full hours while outdoor ones get sent home early. ask which ride you'd be on before you sign anything.

Rain cuts hit hardest in July, so ask if 주휴수당 still applies on weeks you drop under 15 hours.

arrow_drop_up 1 arrow_drop_down
Image petra local ·

One thing worth asking is whether 주휴수당 gets prorated or clawed back at settlement, since some seasonal contracts quietly build that into the base rate.

arrow_drop_up 2 arrow_drop_down

Image petra local ·

Check the contract's 근로계약서 hours, that's the real tell.

arrow_drop_up 5 arrow_drop_down

Image jana local ·

agreed, ask for the actual shift roster in writing

Adventure Park runs on short seasonal contracts, so expect around minimum wage (10,320 won in 2025, maybe 10,500 in 2026) minus 4대보험, which drops your take-home more than people think. On that, a deposit-heavy Seoul rent is a stretch unless you share a place or live out near the park.

arrow_drop_up 4 arrow_drop_down
Image sybilla local ·

yeah but short contracts mean no severance either
