Happy Friday :)

Came to Seoul about 2 weeks ago and planning to stay for a while. Everyone I used to know isn't here anymore so thought I'd see if anyone here would like to hangout or just get food or chat etc..

I'm a 30M Korean-Canadian, born and raised there so my Korean isn't exactly good (existent) so if any locals or anyone who would want to practice English, I would be your person cause I absolutely will not speak Korean to you :) (caveat is you must order the food)

Yes, even down for tonight, not like I have plans πŸ˜…

honestly for tonight just go to itaewon and find a spot on the main strip near hamilton hotel. the foreigner bars there are full of people who don't care about korean skills and it's easy to just sit at the bar and chat. i prefer the downstairs at thursday party cause the crowd is a bit older than the rooftop scene. if you want food before, the korean-chinese place on the corner across from the subway exit 3 does killer jjajangmyeon and the ajumma there speaks zero english so you'll have to point at the menu which is kind of fun

Hit up the Hongdae free market on Saturday afternoons if you want low-pressure hangouts. There's always a crowd of English speakers around the picnic tables by the playground, and the buskers usually draw a decent mix of locals and travelers. For tonight, try the beer alley behind Sangsu Station exit 3. It's loud but friendly and nobody cares if your Korean is shaky.

oh man, if you're down for tonight and want a chill spot where nobody cares about language, check out the benches along Cheonggyecheon near Gwanghwamun. grab some convenience store beers and snacks before you go, it's where all the broke 30-somethings hang out and chat, super low pressure. i've seen groups just randomly join each other there, real easy vibe

The place was PACKED, like seriously wall-to-wall people. I managed to snag a spot at the bar and ordered their legendary spicy soy garlic wings, holy moly, they were incredible. The crunch, the flavor...it was a flavor explosion. But here's the thing: I saw the owner, this super chill dude, whispering to a staff member about some "special sauce." I'm dying to know... what's the secret ingredient in that insane sauce?!
arrow_drop_up 13 arrow_drop_down

the whispering thing is real but its not about the sauce lol. that guy runs a 2am handoff with the chicken supplier, they drop off fresh birds from a farm near Chuncheon three times a week instead of using the frozen stuff most hongdae spots rely on. thats why the texture hits different, not the sauce itself. if u go back ask for the neck & wing combo off menu, its cheaper & honestly the best cut they do

arrow_drop_up 24 arrow_drop_down

the thing nobody mentions is that Dogdogdog's sauce gets its body from cheong, the Korean rice syrup, not sugar. thats why it coats the wing so thick and stays glossy instead of going sticky. i asked a guy who worked there and he said they also add a splash of maesil (plum) extract at the end off the heat. that fruity tang under the garlic is what you're tasting. go on a weekday before 6, weekends the wait hits 40 min easy.

honestly the "secret sauce" thing is prob just marketing. every fried chicken place in Seoul has a version of that story. the real difference at Dogdogdog is they double fry in rice bran oil and toss the wings in the sauce twice, once right out of the fryer and again after a 30 sec rest. thats where the crunch comes from, not some mystery ingredient. if u wanna taste the actual base, order the banban half plain half spicy and dip the plain one in the spicy sauce yourself.
