Off the beaten track: The university areas for good eats and streetfood?

Unfortunately, since I cannot speak Korean I'm not really getting any details from the vids. We're gonna be living near Jongno 3 station and I can see there are several uni areas within some 5-6 stops from us on the various lines. Any recommendations?

Kamsahapnida (I know it's supposed to be 'g' but it always sounds like 'k' in the videos :)

you're right about the 'g' thing, it's more of a soft k sound, don't stress it.

hongdae is the obvious one for street food but honestly the stalls around hongik uni station exit 9 can be hit or miss. i'd check out the area around ewha womans university instead, the main street heading up to the campus has a bunch of tteokbokki and fried stuff stalls that students actually line up for, not tourists. it's just one stop south of hongdae on line 2 from jongno 3, you take line 5 to jongno 3 ga and then switch

another solid spot is the back alleys near korea university, a bit further out on line 1 but worth it for the gimbap shops that do a full roll for like 1,500 won. the vibe is less polished than the tourist spots but the food's authentic

i think the area around sejong university is worth checking out too, it's on line 4 so a bit of a trek from jongno 3 but they have a lot of cheap good eats around the station, including a bunch of jjimjilbang style cafes that do late night food, my friend who goes there says the bungeo ppang from the street vendors is really good, super crispy on the outside and fluffy inside

honestly if you're near jongno 3, the area around sangsu station is lowkey underrated for this. it's closer to hongdae but feels way more like a student zone with random snack carts and tiny kimbap places tucked between vintage shops. i'd walk from sangsu exit 3 towards the dinosaur statue, theres a guy sells hotteok with seeds inside, not the syrupy tourist version

The place was PACKED, like seriously wall-to-wall people. I managed to snag a spot at the bar and ordered their legendary spicy soy garlic wings, holy moly, they were incredible. The crunch, the flavor...it was a flavor explosion. But here's the thing: I saw the owner, this super chill dude, whispering to a staff member about some "special sauce." I'm dying to know... what's the secret ingredient in that insane sauce?!

the whispering thing is real but its not about the sauce lol. that guy runs a 2am handoff with the chicken supplier, they drop off fresh birds from a farm near Chuncheon three times a week instead of using the frozen stuff most hongdae spots rely on. thats why the texture hits different, not the sauce itself. if u go back ask for the neck & wing combo off menu, its cheaper & honestly the best cut they do

the thing nobody mentions is that Dogdogdog's sauce gets its body from cheong, the Korean rice syrup, not sugar. thats why it coats the wing so thick and stays glossy instead of going sticky. i asked a guy who worked there and he said they also add a splash of maesil (plum) extract at the end off the heat. that fruity tang under the garlic is what you're tasting. go on a weekday before 6, weekends the wait hits 40 min easy.

honestly the "secret sauce" thing is prob just marketing. every fried chicken place in Seoul has a version of that story. the real difference at Dogdogdog is they double fry in rice bran oil and toss the wings in the sauce twice, once right out of the fryer and again after a 30 sec rest. thats where the crunch comes from, not some mystery ingredient. if u wanna taste the actual base, order the banban half plain half spicy and dip the plain one in the spicy sauce yourself.
