I'm pretty new to Seoul and I'm working here over the summer for a job.

I've got a date coming up on Friday night but not sure where to take the girl. I'm looking for a chill bar for cocktails, beer or wine (speakeasy-esque) but pretty open to suggestions.

I don't have a massive budget so not too swanky so a decently and reasonably priced place would be welcome.

We're meeting in iljiro because my office is nearby. We're down to walk up to 10-15 mins if the place is worth it!

Please share me your recommendations!!

fwiw there's a spot called Le Chamber right near Euljiro 3-ga station, it's a bit of a speakeasy hidden in a basement. their cocktail menu changes seasonally and most drinks are around 13k won, not crazy expensive. the lighting is dim but not too dark, good for conversation. it's maybe a 5 min walk from your office so you won't have to drag her far

If you're in Euljiro, check out Sangsu-gil or walk toward the alley bars near Euljiro 3-ga. There's a place called Pong Dang that does natural wines and small plates, pretty chill and not too pricey. It's a bit of a hidden gem and easy on the wallet for a date night.

honestly check out Alice in Myeongdong, it's a speakeasy kinda spot hidden behind a bookshelf. their cocktails are solid and around 12-15k won so not too bad for a date vibe

The place was PACKED, like seriously wall-to-wall people. I managed to snag a spot at the bar and ordered their legendary spicy soy garlic wings, holy moly, they were incredible. The crunch, the flavor...it was a flavor explosion. But here's the thing: I saw the owner, this super chill dude, whispering to a staff member about some "special sauce." I'm dying to know... what's the secret ingredient in that insane sauce?!

the whispering thing is real but its not about the sauce lol. that guy runs a 2am handoff with the chicken supplier, they drop off fresh birds from a farm near Chuncheon three times a week instead of using the frozen stuff most hongdae spots rely on. thats why the texture hits different, not the sauce itself. if u go back ask for the neck & wing combo off menu, its cheaper & honestly the best cut they do

the thing nobody mentions is that Dogdogdog's sauce gets its body from cheong, the Korean rice syrup, not sugar. thats why it coats the wing so thick and stays glossy instead of going sticky. i asked a guy who worked there and he said they also add a splash of maesil (plum) extract at the end off the heat. that fruity tang under the garlic is what you're tasting. go on a weekday before 6, weekends the wait hits 40 min easy.

honestly the "secret sauce" thing is prob just marketing. every fried chicken place in Seoul has a version of that story. the real difference at Dogdogdog is they double fry in rice bran oil and toss the wings in the sauce twice, once right out of the fryer and again after a 30 sec rest. thats where the crunch comes from, not some mystery ingredient. if u wanna taste the actual base, order the banban half plain half spicy and dip the plain one in the spicy sauce yourself.
