since you're into modern stuff, don't skip the Daelim Museum in Jongno, it's smaller but their curation is always on point, especially the photography exhibitions. for a more local scene, head to the Mullae district, there's this cluster of old factory buildings turned into studios and galleries, very raw and not many tourists go there. the opening nights at Art Space Pool in Seongsu are also worth checking, younger crowd and usually free drinks tbh. i'm around your age and always down to wander through a gallery and grab makgeolli after, just shoot me a dm when you land
honestly you're gonna love the Seoul art scene, it's way more than just the big museums. for modern stuff, hit up the Leeum Samsung Museum in Hannam-dong, their permanent collection is solid and the building itself is a work of art. but for the real underground vibe, walk around the alleyways of Samcheong-dong near Anguk station, tons of tiny galleries tucked between hanok houses and coffee shops, many are free and show rotating local artists.
if you want to meet other art people, the opening nights at Gallery Hyundai or Arario are usually packed with locals who speak some English and are down to chat. just check their instagram for reception times. also the MMCA in Jongno has a nice courtyard where people hang out after looking, good spot to strike up a convo.

Yeah the art scene here is legit. If you want something a bit different from the big museums, check out the Seoul Museum of Art in Jeong-dong, it's free and always has interesting contemporary shows. Also Bukchon has a bunch of small artist-run spaces that are less touristy than Samcheong-dong. I'm in my 40s too and always happy to show someone around, send me a message if you want a local guide for an afternoon.

the n37 bus tip is gold, i've used it more times than i can count. one thing i'd add for the hongdae crowd is that if you're into the indie scene, skip club ff and go to strange fruit instead, it's a tiny basement venue off the main drag that books local punk and shoegaze bands for like 5k won cover. the sound system is janky but the energy is way more authentic than the tourist-heavy spots. also for gangnam, the line at octagon can hit 30 minutes on weekends so get there before 11pm or just go to arena which is less crowded imo
yeah this is a really good breakdown, especially pointing out the cover charge differences which a lot of people dont think about. one thing i'd add is that if you're in hongdae and wanna avoid the cover altogether, walk a block or two off the main street towards the yeonnam-dong area, there's a strip of tiny bars like the vinyl and soju place that's basically just a dude's apartment with records, no cover and soju is like 3k won. also for gangnam, the subway stops running around midnight but the bus from gangnam station to sinsa runs all night, way easier than fighting for a taxi. the dress code tip is real though, i saw a guy get turned away from octagon for wearing air force ones once
