Okay so I know Hongdae is only for young mainstream people now. What neighbourhood is best for over 30s who like indie music and dive bars?
mangwon is solid but ngl haebangchon might be more your speed. it's got that old seoul feel with a bunch of small music venues like mango house where indie bands play for free sometimes. the bars there are proper dives too, think cheap soju and plastic chairs on the sidewalk.
if you want something even more off the radar, go to yeonnam-dong instead of hongdae. it's literally right next to it but feels like a different planet. there's a tiny place called club sharp that does random experimental sets and the crowd is mostly artists in their 30s. drinks are cheap and nobody's taking selfies.
honestly you'd prob like mangwon more than hongdae these days. it's got that same gritty vibe but without the crowds of 20 year olds. there's a spot called space bar that does live indie shows most weekends and the crowd is def more our age. plus the bars along the main street feel like proper dives, not instagram sets.
if you want even quieter, hapjeong is right next door and has some solid spots tucked in the side streets. the area around exit 4 has a few old school drinking places where people actually talk to each other.
haebangchon's already been mentioned but i'd throw in gyeongnidan too. it's right next to it and has this weird mix of old school bars and tiny live music spots. there's a place called evans lounge that does jazz and indie stuff, crowd is def 30s and up. feels less discovered than mangwon tbh

this is a solid list, one thing i'd add is that the t-money card also works for the airport railroad express (arex) and you can get a discount if you buy a "climate card" from the subway machines for like 62,000 won a month, unlimited rides on seoul metro and buses. also, for free stuff, the seoul city wall hiking trail from naksan park gives you amazing views of the city and bukchon without paying a thing, plus it's way less crowded than namsan. gwangjang market is great but go for the sundubu (7000 won) at the stalls in the back, not the front ones near the entrance which are pricier for tourists
