Okay so I know Hongdae is only for young mainstream people now. What neighbourhood is best for over 30s who like indie music and dive bars?
Mullae-dong in Yeongdeungpo is the one people sleep on. It's still a metalworking district so you get actual dive bars wedged between welding shops, and the crowd at places like the spots off Mullae Yeok 3-beongul is mostly locals in their thirties and forties who are there to drink, not to be seen. For indie, the old warehouse venues around there book noise and post-punk rather than the polished Hongdae stuff, and prices stay low because it never got the makeover. The tradeoff is it's a bit of a trek from the center and quieter on weeknights.
Haebangchon is where you want to look. The bars around Sinheung-ro have that proper worn-in feel, and you get a mix of older expats, Korean artists, and people who just never left the indie scene after their twenties. For actual live music, check what's on at Venue 1999 near Noksapyeong, it's small and the bookings lean experimental rather than the polished stuff you get in Hongdae.
yeonnam is worth a look too, the crowd skews a bit older than hongdae proper and the bar scene along the gyeongui line forest park is more laid back. there's a stretch of small places around dongjin market that stay open late & nobody cares how old u are. ik seoul has changed a lot but that pocket still feels like the old version of the area before the crowds showed up

Coming from Haebangchon, take line 6 to Itaewon then walk up, taxi is only like 6,000 won though. Skip the scones honestly, they're dry. Order the first flush darjeeling a la carte and a slice of their matcha roll.
