Hi everyone,

I just got accepted to a university in Seoul and will be heading to Korea in a month. I've been looking into accommodation options, and honestly, the prices are quite a shock compared to what I'm used to. Where I'm from, you can get a 3-bedroom place for what they're asking here!

Does anyone have tips on finding a cheap one-room studio in Seoul? I'm aiming for something around ₩300K-₩500K with a deposit of ₩5-7 million. I'd rather not spend too much on rent since I want to save my money for other things.

Any advice would be really helpful!

Thanks in advance!!

honestly for that deposit range you might wanna look into 원룸 officetels in areas like hapjeong or gongdeok instead of the typical student spots. theyre a bit older buildings but you can sometimes find studios for ₩400-500K with ₩5M deposit if you use 직방 or 다방 and filter by 준공년도 before 2005. the tradeoff is older plumbing and no elevator but the rooms are actual apartments not shoeboxes

also check if your uni has a 기숙사 or 협력 하숙집 situation first. some schools have partnerships with local 하숙 houses that include meals and utilities for around ₩500-600K total. no deposit needed either which saves u that chunk of cash for exploring the city

yeah that budget is tight but doable if u look in the right spots. goshiwons are prob your best bet for that price range, you can find ones around hongdae or sinchon for ₩400-500K with a tiny deposit like ₩500K. the rooms are small but theyre furnished and usually include utilities which saves u the headache of setting stuff up

if u really want a one-room with that ₩5-7M deposit, try looking in areas a bit further out like sangsu or mangwon instead of directly in hongdae. those neighborhoods are still close to the uni areas and have way more studios in your range. i saw a few on dabang app last month for ₩450K with ₩5M deposit near mangwon station

just a heads up, real estate fees here are usually one month's rent so factor that in too. also check if the place includes 관리비 or if that's separate, some landlords sneak that in and it adds ₩30-50K monthly

The place was PACKED, like seriously wall-to-wall people. I managed to snag a spot at the bar and ordered their legendary spicy soy garlic wings, holy moly, they were incredible. The crunch, the flavor...it was a flavor explosion. But here's the thing: I saw the owner, this super chill dude, whispering to a staff member about some "special sauce." I'm dying to know... what's the secret ingredient in that insane sauce?!

the whispering thing is real but its not about the sauce lol. that guy runs a 2am handoff with the chicken supplier, they drop off fresh birds from a farm near Chuncheon three times a week instead of using the frozen stuff most hongdae spots rely on. thats why the texture hits different, not the sauce itself. if u go back ask for the neck & wing combo off menu, its cheaper & honestly the best cut they do

the thing nobody mentions is that Dogdogdog's sauce gets its body from cheong, the Korean rice syrup, not sugar. thats why it coats the wing so thick and stays glossy instead of going sticky. i asked a guy who worked there and he said they also add a splash of maesil (plum) extract at the end off the heat. that fruity tang under the garlic is what you're tasting. go on a weekday before 6, weekends the wait hits 40 min easy.

honestly the "secret sauce" thing is prob just marketing. every fried chicken place in Seoul has a version of that story. the real difference at Dogdogdog is they double fry in rice bran oil and toss the wings in the sauce twice, once right out of the fryer and again after a 30 sec rest. thats where the crunch comes from, not some mystery ingredient. if u wanna taste the actual base, order the banban half plain half spicy and dip the plain one in the spicy sauce yourself.
