Hey Everyone!

I'm in Seoul visiting family with a close friend of mine from NYC and he came down with something unexpectedly last night. He is stuck in his hotel room vomiting and we were supposed to go out tonight and explore the nightlife.

Might be a longshot but any other solo travelers here in Seoul right now want to go out tonight or tomorrow night for some music and drinks?

I'm 31, Korean-American, male, work in tech and speak Korean fluently.

honestly if you're up for it, hit up the Hongdae playground area around 9pm, there's always a cluster of people by the old stage just drinking and chatting. i'm not solo but my usual crew is tiny, two of us, and we're grabbing soju at a pojangmacha near Hongik Univ station exit 3 if you wanna join, just look for the yellow tent with the ajumma who yells at everyone. your korean will come in handy, she's got opinions about everything. if that's too random, try Soundholic in Hapjeong, it's a tiny vinyl bar that gets packed with locals who actually wanna talk, not just hook up. friend's stomach thing sounds rough, maybe skip the fried chicken tonight and hit up a gimbap place for him tomorrow.

There's a solid crew that floats around Hongdae on weekends, mostly expats and travelers who are down to meet new people. If your friend's still out of commission, check out the basement bar at Vinyl Underground near Sangsu Station, they do live sets and the crowd's pretty chatty. For tomorrow night, a bunch of folks usually end up at Fountain in Itaewon around 11, it's a bit touristy but easy to strike up a conversation. I'd offer to join but I've got a family dinner I can't skip, hope your friend recovers fast.

i mean if ur already in seoul just download the meetup app or check the expat fb groups, people post stuff last minute all the time. or just go to gangnam station and follow the noise lol

The place was PACKED, like seriously wall-to-wall people. I managed to snag a spot at the bar and ordered their legendary spicy soy garlic wings, holy moly, they were incredible. The crunch, the flavor...it was a flavor explosion. But here's the thing: I saw the owner, this super chill dude, whispering to a staff member about some "special sauce." I'm dying to know... what's the secret ingredient in that insane sauce?!
arrow_drop_up 14 arrow_drop_down

the whispering thing is real but its not about the sauce lol. that guy runs a 2am handoff with the chicken supplier, they drop off fresh birds from a farm near Chuncheon three times a week instead of using the frozen stuff most hongdae spots rely on. thats why the texture hits different, not the sauce itself. if u go back ask for the neck & wing combo off menu, its cheaper & honestly the best cut they do

arrow_drop_up 24 arrow_drop_down

the thing nobody mentions is that Dogdogdog's sauce gets its body from cheong, the Korean rice syrup, not sugar. thats why it coats the wing so thick and stays glossy instead of going sticky. i asked a guy who worked there and he said they also add a splash of maesil (plum) extract at the end off the heat. that fruity tang under the garlic is what you're tasting. go on a weekday before 6, weekends the wait hits 40 min easy.

honestly the "secret sauce" thing is prob just marketing. every fried chicken place in Seoul has a version of that story. the real difference at Dogdogdog is they double fry in rice bran oil and toss the wings in the sauce twice, once right out of the fryer and again after a 30 sec rest. thats where the crunch comes from, not some mystery ingredient. if u wanna taste the actual base, order the banban half plain half spicy and dip the plain one in the spicy sauce yourself.
