Souvenirs?

Hey all, I'll be visiting Seoul soon!

Does anyone know where I can get folding fans, good tea and key tags (Hanji preferably) for cheap? This is for around 10-11 people lol

I'd hit up the Namdaemun Market instead of Insadong if you're trying to keep costs down for that many people. The main alley behind the gate has a few stationary stalls selling hanji key tags for around 1,000 won each, and the tea shops near the fish market section often have smaller bags for gifting. For folding fans, the vendors near the south exit usually have basic ones starting at 3,000 won, just check the paper quality before you buy.

if you're already in insadong and find the main street a bit touristy, try the smaller alleys branching off it. there's a hanji workshop near the jogyesa temple side that sells handmade key tags for like 3,000 won each, way better quality than the machine made ones. for tea, the Osulloc store in the area is nice but overpriced imo, the little unmarked tea shops on the side streets near anguk station sell loose leaf for half the price and they'll wrap it up nice for gifts

insadong is your best bet for all three tbh, lots of little shops along the main street. for cheap hanji key tags check the basement of the ssamziegil building, they usually have a good selection

The place was PACKED, like seriously wall-to-wall people. I managed to snag a spot at the bar and ordered their legendary spicy soy garlic wings, holy moly, they were incredible. The crunch, the flavor...it was a flavor explosion. But here's the thing: I saw the owner, this super chill dude, whispering to a staff member about some "special sauce." I'm dying to know... what's the secret ingredient in that insane sauce?!

the whispering thing is real but its not about the sauce lol. that guy runs a 2am handoff with the chicken supplier, they drop off fresh birds from a farm near Chuncheon three times a week instead of using the frozen stuff most hongdae spots rely on. thats why the texture hits different, not the sauce itself. if u go back ask for the neck & wing combo off menu, its cheaper & honestly the best cut they do

the thing nobody mentions is that Dogdogdog's sauce gets its body from cheong, the Korean rice syrup, not sugar. thats why it coats the wing so thick and stays glossy instead of going sticky. i asked a guy who worked there and he said they also add a splash of maesil (plum) extract at the end off the heat. that fruity tang under the garlic is what you're tasting. go on a weekday before 6, weekends the wait hits 40 min easy.

honestly the "secret sauce" thing is prob just marketing. every fried chicken place in Seoul has a version of that story. the real difference at Dogdogdog is they double fry in rice bran oil and toss the wings in the sauce twice, once right out of the fryer and again after a 30 sec rest. thats where the crunch comes from, not some mystery ingredient. if u wanna taste the actual base, order the banban half plain half spicy and dip the plain one in the spicy sauce yourself.
