Hii,

What are some of the things I could do alone in Seoul for a weekend? For context, I live here full time, but it has been difficult to make friends so I don't have anyone to spend time with.... do you guys have any recommendations on how I could spend my time alone here?

If you're into something a bit more active, try the riverside bike path along the Han starting from Ttukseom. You can rent a bike for like 3,000 won an hour and just ride all the way to Jamsil or even further to Gangdong. It's pretty flat and easy, and on a sunny weekend morning you'll see tons of people cycling alone with headphones in, nobody paying attention to anyone else. Pack a convenience store kimbap and stop at one of the benches near the Seongsan Bridge for a break, it's a solid few hours of solo time.

honestly living here solo i get it, it can feel isolating at first but there's so much stuff that's actually better alone. have you tried hongdae on a weekday afternoon? grab a coffee at one of those tiny roasteries on the side streets near the main walking street, then just wander into the independent bookshops or record stores. the vibe is way more chill than weekend crowds

also ngl a solo noraebang session is underrated. those coin ones in sinchon or near hongdae station are cheap like 2-3k won for 30 mins and you can just belt out whatever without judgment. nobody cares if you're alone, it's pretty common

if you want something more lowkey, the seoul forest area on a sunday morning is nice. grab a pastry from that bakery near ttukseom station and just sit by the water. lots of people reading or sketching alone so you won't feel out of place

for evenings try a solo movie at cgv in yongsan or apgujeong. they have those premium seats that recline and you can just zone out for two hours. way better than sitting at home scrolling

you live here full time so you might already know this but the national museum of korea in yongsan is a whole day solo activity if you let it. free entry to the permanent exhibits and the grounds are huge, you can walk around the ponds and pagodas between galleries without rushing. they also do evening concerts sometimes for like 5k won, nice way to cap off a slow day alone

another thing is just picking a random neighborhood and doing a self-guided cafe crawl. like take the subway to mangwon or seongsu and hit three different spots in one afternoon, each with a totally different vibe. bring a book or just people watch, nobody bothers you and you get to try stuff you'd never notice with a group

The place was PACKED, like seriously wall-to-wall people. I managed to snag a spot at the bar and ordered their legendary spicy soy garlic wings, holy moly, they were incredible. The crunch, the flavor...it was a flavor explosion. But here's the thing: I saw the owner, this super chill dude, whispering to a staff member about some "special sauce." I'm dying to know... what's the secret ingredient in that insane sauce?!

the whispering thing is real but its not about the sauce lol. that guy runs a 2am handoff with the chicken supplier, they drop off fresh birds from a farm near Chuncheon three times a week instead of using the frozen stuff most hongdae spots rely on. thats why the texture hits different, not the sauce itself. if u go back ask for the neck & wing combo off menu, its cheaper & honestly the best cut they do

arrow_drop_up 24 arrow_drop_down

the thing nobody mentions is that Dogdogdog's sauce gets its body from cheong, the Korean rice syrup, not sugar. thats why it coats the wing so thick and stays glossy instead of going sticky. i asked a guy who worked there and he said they also add a splash of maesil (plum) extract at the end off the heat. that fruity tang under the garlic is what you're tasting. go on a weekday before 6, weekends the wait hits 40 min easy.

honestly the "secret sauce" thing is prob just marketing. every fried chicken place in Seoul has a version of that story. the real difference at Dogdogdog is they double fry in rice bran oil and toss the wings in the sauce twice, once right out of the fryer and again after a 30 sec rest. thats where the crunch comes from, not some mystery ingredient. if u wanna taste the actual base, order the banban half plain half spicy and dip the plain one in the spicy sauce yourself.
